 Posted: Mon 12th May 9:04am Post subject: New Plymouth's Coastal Cycle/ Walkway Gets Extended |

The extension of New Plymouth's award-winning Coastal Walkway has been given the go-ahead following substantial funding from Land Transport New Zealand.
About 4 km of pathway, including a 70 m shared cycle/pedestrian bridge over the Waiwhakaiho River, will be created to extend the Coastal Walkway from Waiwhakaiho through to Ellesmere Ave in Bell Block.
The estimated $3.1 million project will increase the walkway's length from 7 km to more than 11 km. Land Transport New Zealand is contributing $1.88m, or 61 per cent of the project's cost, with New Plymouth District Council meeting the rest.
Land Transport New Zealand regional partnerships manager Rosalie Orr says the pathway will provide cyclists between Bell Block and the city with a safer and more pleasant route along Rewa Rewa Reserve and the coast.

Yep - thats great news for New Plymouth locals and visitors. There's some great work being done on these types of trails: Taupo's lakefront, Napiers river / coastal cycleway, New Plymouth waterfront.

Great news - rode the current walkway yesterday, and was great to see loads of young riders out, and a few alternative lines and jumps forming...

Yeah, it came up on the intranet at work last wee. The whole walkways been a great project. Its hard to think that it used to be an old decrepit railway. It's a great little ride.

The New Plymouth District Council’s Project Team are to be congratulated for their successful application for the funding from Land Transport New Zealand and the obtaining the remaining money from within for the extension of the Coastal Pathway from the Waiwhakaiho River to Bell Block. When completed next year, it will provide cyclists and walkers an attractive alternative when commuting to and from Bell Block, to the heavy traffic volumes on SH3 especially the section from Vickers Road through to the One Way system.
The provision of such alternative routes for more active modes of transport such as cycling and walking helps address New Zealand’s climate change, health, urban design and transport problems. These are all urgent reasons to increase support for walking and cycling.
What is needed locally and nationally is a more sustainable transport system that requires integration of central and local government strategies across all sectors, including health, housing and regional development. It’s not just a case of having a 30% target for urban walking and cycling trips by 2040, as reiterated by local MP Harry Duynhoven, but of making sure the full benefits of walking and cycling are realised in quality of life for the whole community. The national walking and cycling strategy (Getting There – on Foot, by Cycle) should be used to set intermediate targets well before 2040 and to ensure these are realised in actual projects.
This extension to Bell Block is one such project and a significant item within both the NPDC’s Cycling Strategy “New Plymouth: The cycling district” and the Taranaki Regional Council’s Regional Walkways and Cycleways Strategy for Taranaki. We in Taranaki are lucky to have the sea at our side and as a community have received the initial bequest from a local family that set off the chain of events that has lead to us enjoying the Coastal Pathway as it is now.
I for one cannot wait to cycle across the breaking wave, think of Santiago Calatrava the bridge designer, catch a view of the mountain on my way back, check up on what the surfers are up to at the river mouth and enjoy what our taxes and rates have provided for all who live and visit here.
