About time this silly policy was changed.

-----------------

http://www.stuff.co.nz/4527560a11.html

Bicycles will be allowed on Wellington trains for free from July 1 in a bid to encourage people to use public transport.

At present cyclists pay the price of an adult fare, up to a maximum of $4, to take their bikes on the train.

Peter Glensor, the chairman of Greater Wellington regional council's transport and access committee, said a survey of cyclists found they were discouraged from using trains because of the extra charge for a bike.

If there was no space on the train, however, bikes would not be allowed.

The council would also investigate equipping the new Wairarapa trains with upright racks or hooks in the roof, to better transport bikes.

Good!

However, the "If there was no space on the train, however, bikes would not be allowed" part is not so good Sad

{Posted via mobile.vorb.org.nz} rumours were about that a max of 2 bikes per train could be accomodated in the 'guards compartment' - if they were clean and no other luggage was already in there . . . . .

I'm hoping that this is either not the case or that they have increased capacity . . . .

{Posted via mobile.vorb.org.nz} I've taken my bike on the train to get to the ferry a couple of times - if it's empty they let you hang onto your bike, if not they put it through the doors towards the fornt of the carriage where there is a big space. The first time they did this I was a bit concerned, but then realised I was about to leave my bike leaned up against the wall on the ferry with everyone elses bikes for three hours where it is much more likeely to get damaged.

although - if everyone jumps on the bike on the train bandwagon then space may be an issue.

I can see this being uber useful for after work rides at Makara, when I really don't feel like slogging it along Hutt Rd on the mtb to get home...

I didn't know Hutt Road went to Makara Peak either Eh?

But seriously, the cruise from Karori down to the train is fine - it's the slog out to the Hutt I can do without. Or I could just HTFU....

Maybe when they get the new trains, they could have a standing-only car with a few poles to hold onto. Would be really easy to get bikes on and off those.

I've never been charged to take my bike on the train, and most of the time I've taken it has been peak time (like showing up at 5.24 for the 5.25 - they just let me put the bike in the guards bit and wander through to sit in the doorway). Maybe it's cos I'm in my kit when I get the train (or maybe they see my punctures and take pity...).

But it's good that now they will officially not charge.

Oh, and I reckon 6 bikes easy in the guards compartment and I think they have one of those for every 2 carriages.

wgtngurl, max 3 bikes in the compartment. only if its a long train (ie -several units) can you take more - that means several guard compartments. and if it looks slightly dirty start pedalling - the guards can be sreknaw at times.
why can't they just tow an empty train trailer thingy on every train -you know, the things containers go on. the bogey thingy. just put a rail round it.

Because someone at OSH would have an aneurysm. However some sort of more open transport would be a good start.
