As part of a commitment to New Zealand's 'Getting there - on foot, by cycle' plan, Land Transport NZ seeks a consistent approach to the delivery of cyclist skills education to encourage people to cycle more often. As a result, a core set of national guidelines have been developed to enable instructors to teach cyclist training in both school and adult training environments.

The guidelines have been adapted to suit the New Zealand environment from the UK Bikeability programme established on behalf of Cycling England. These guidelines have been evaluated as best practice, particularly for providing practical cycling skills on the road.

Bah, I'd be encouraged to cycle more if the LTNZ developed a plan to teach idiot drivers to respect other road users that aren't sitting in a giant metal vehicle.

Seriously I almost got nailed 3 times the other day riding less than 2 KM from home to the local shop and back.

That would be my plan also. But when has the LTSA done something correctly.

I've had a quick read through and they pretty much got this right. For example, one lesson was to teach people to assess if it was safer to use the road or a cycle lane and that cycle lanes aren't compulsory....

As far as idiot drivers go, it may be easier to raise the price of petrol to $10 p/l. You don't see too many rich idiots, just elohssas....

No they wouldn't care. And if they did it would always be your fault.

I also like how they use the terms primary and secondary positions, with the primary position being in the middle of the lane and the secondary being over to the left, but not in the gutter....

I'll only obey these guidelines when there's a complementary driver education campaign. Seriously, like hell I'm getting in the primary position on a narrow bend on a country road or multi-lane roundabout. With driver education levels as they are now, this is going to kill people.
I'll stick to pretending to be a pedestrian when turning right through large intersections, thanks.

Anybody else think the the release of biking guidlines a bizzare thing? Eh? It used to be biking was like learning to walk, everybody could teach and learn how do it?? We now have a huge firkin bureaucratic set of guidelines for it.... A sad indictment on society that we have to have mummy state tell us how it should be done.... Lets not think for ourselves that might be dangerous......rant over

I'd say.

Bling its guidelines on riding on the road, not how to learn to ride.

Bling, the bicycle road code has been around for years, so this is nothing new.

This actually looks a lot better. Updated guidelines and a system to teach the guidelines to young people/new cyclists. Double Thumbs Up

How do people feel about kicking cars that get too close?

(just to let them know you're there)
