Posted: Sun 11th May 9:12pm Post subject: Help People Get Helmets.
Since I have been getting back into biking. I have been noticing the ammount of children and adults riding around without helmets on.
Well today I spent some time at the Hornby BMX track and noticed that over 50% of the kids there were not wearing helmets. This is usually the case when riding places like this.
In the last 2 weeks. I have witnessed 2 guys go down hard, straight onto their heads. Luckily they were both wearing helmets at the time. And after whoever crashed has managed to get up and move off the track I have tried to educate the kids without helmets about how usefull they are in a crash like that.
Now I know that a % of them may own one and just choose not to wear it.
But after talking to some of them I found out that they dont actually own one.
This really worries me.
And it got me to thinking. Why dont we proposition the government to help out families that may not be able to afford the correct safety gear as well as a bike.
Or even set up some kind of opportunity for people to maybe donate old helmets that they do not use anymore. This way families could get in ring up and be able to get a helmet for very cheap or maybe free.
Either way I am sure that it would be cheaper for the government to fund something like this, than it would be to fund all the medical bills of the kids and adults that fall off their bikes and smack their headswithout wearing the appropriate headwear.
This idea is alot like when car seats came out and alot of families could not afford to buy them. Plunket came to the rescue their. They helped out families. Why cant we find another way to save alot of people harm?
This is just an idea that I wanted to get some feedback on.
Regards
Henry.

it's $30 for a helmet from the warehouse, is that not too much?
So it doesn't look as cool as a $400 troy lee or giro, but it will still protect your brains.
about the whole "not being able to afford a helmet" deal, if someone is riding around on a blinged bike, you would think that they can afford a helmet, yes?

Yes. I would assume that.
But the majority of people I see on blinged bikes are wearing helmets.
It's the people on the old bikes that they maybe got for $30 that I am mainly talking about.
All I am trying to do is figure out a way to getmore people wearing helmets.
but thats alot when on limited income, when the kid probably wont wear it anyway, and they wont cos you don't care cos if you did you would of brought one and they would be whearing it
but still a nice Idea

I have had mothers come in to buy helmets and say at $39 is way to much. Then they go across the road and but top shelf from the bottle shop. Ive seen it at least 5 times.

But the thing is I do care. This is what this is all about. I would love to buy enough helmets to supplyanyone without with one.
But I just dont have that sort of money.

This is the sort of thing that really sickens me. Putting your child or whoever at risk. Because they want to get ssiped.
It is also one of the things that I want to help against.

I know you care, but the perents obviously don't and I asume the kids are happy not wearing one till they hit their head.
well, i dont really know about this subject. I personally think its up to the rider (who say is at an age to make a mature decision), and what sort of riding your doing. I ride bmx, and so does my brother. i always wear a helmet, he doesnt. He knows whats going to happen if he hits his head, and its his decision to wear one or not. I have never seen him hit his head, and hes not a parcpy rider. Heres a thought, when did you last hear of a tragic accident on a bmx (in a skatepark, for instance)? edit: stephen murray. I cant recall it, whereas in mountain biking, take accidents such as tara llanes's, my cousin ( now quadriplegic), the guy from "wicked racing", theres so many more within mountain biking.
Ive really gone off the subject now, but for me, If someone doesnt ride with a helmet on, has an accident, they have only their own arrogance and ignorance to blame.

And will rely on money taxed from you for the rest of their life.
Personally i would prefer my tax going on giving everyone helmets and making them wear them, than paying for their hospital bills.
