Technically, it would be possible to ride in both directions, however, as it descends overall about 500m south to north, it's much more fun to ride from the south to north and end at the pub at Owhango.

Its a nice ride either way. We did the 'recommended' way in about 3hrs, with breaks. Ride time showed at about 2hr20 I think.
There are a few advantages to the 'usual' way - the creek at the end for a swim, the shops in town, and of course, the pub.
As for shuttles, It doesn't cost too much to get dropped off and picked up - pretty much any of the Tongariro Crossing shuttle operators will be happy to take you out there, they just put you and your bikes up the back of the bus then give them a ring when you arrive at the pub... From memory cost us around $40 each for the whole thing.
While you're down that way, would recommend Tree Trunk Gorge as a nice (if short) little trip the day before or after.
If you don't already have a copy, there is an old copy of the NZ MTB ride guide for free on google books which has info on rides in that area...
