Zane, if I was to head out for a 3-6 hr ride by myself when I am up there in a few weeks would you suggest I do an in and out Wakamarina or in and out Nydia (from south end). I've done neither before so have no idea what either are like other than hearing guys like you saying they are must do trails.

If you are riding in and out and want 3 to 6 hours I would suggest wakamarina from the onamalutu end.

For extra forestry road hill climb leave car at Onamalutu domain or reserve or whatever it is (campground maybe??), or you can drive up to the start of the singletrack. The ride up to Fosters clearing from the start of the singletrack is probably only an hour or so, but coming back down from there is a blast!! You could go further than Fosters clearing, but there is a pretty big dip after that, which would take a bit of climbing out of again...

You could probably manage a full loop in about 6 hours, but it is a long road ride to link the 2 ends of the trail... If you have a driver the singletrack carpark drop off and pick up at the other end of the singletrack is the best option. You would get through the whole trail in about 3 to 4 hours easily.

Might pay to check with some locals up there, I heard there was a tree across the road meaning you could not drive all the way up to the start, and so would have to ride the forestry road up...

Nydia bay is great as well. Probably an hour and a bit up to the first saddle (from the North/west Tennyson Inlet end). Lovely views, pretty steep (granny a lot of the way) but very rideable. Only ride this track if it is dry... From the south/east (Kaiuma) end it is still good, but goes through some pine forest/scrub a lot of the way. Definitely ride the North/west end or Wakamarina as in/outs before hitting Nydia from the south.

Or as Switchbacker mentioned riding into the Wakamaria from the trout hotel end (canvastown end) would be good too. I would guess at about 2 hours to get in and up to the top of the hill (many many switchbacks on the way up...) Definitely a fun ride once you turn around and head on back down. The ride in from that end goes up past a couple of huts and things which are nice to have a look around... With this option you could always go as far as time/energy allowed and then turn around and come back down...

Yeah, that sounds great for me. Remember, I'm a nutter who loves climbing so the lotsa and lotsa switchback thing actually appeals to me going up as well as down Alien

Just my 2 cents...

the road is clear up to the Carpark...for the Ono-Waka ride(or Fosters Clearing)... Double Thumbs Up

it was shut for a short time as the forestry guys re-alined the road so they could get their big trucks in and out.

If your nuts about climbing then go for the Wakamarina side (pure madness Smile )

Or you could go from Onomalutu side to Fossies then on to the next peak... abit of bike carrying invovled, but if you get that far you may as well drop into the Waka...i reckon

you could get a shuttle to pick you up at Canvastown and take you back to the Northbank turnoff and bike back up to you vehicle....just as a thought Eh?

Mitch, you going to be around next Saturday (19th)? Keen for a ride? I haven't decided exactly where I'll go yet but plan to hit all or part of the Onamalutu-Wakamarina track. Depends on the weather, how I feel on the day, and if my darling wife is prepared to do the shuttle thing...

PM me if you are keen Smile
