An interesting story. Of course, the downside of such an approach (ignoring all of the IP issues with seed-saving etc) is the omohgenisation of a food crop to a single strain.

not that GE is bad in it self but, that is an example of why we need more genetic diversity not GE.

Has occured already in a lot of crops already.

though GM may be able to solve this problem, it leads to planting monocultures (or the planting of clones) which are venerable to a plague of one sort or the other.

doesn't what? plant monocultures? I thought that was the advantage of sexual reproduction over asexual reproduction.
