Hey, basically i'm thinking of moving over to New Zealand (from the UK) at the end of this year and more specifically, moving to whangarei. I've seen some pictures on other sites but it's hard to get an idea of what the MTB scene is like near you guys. Just wanted some general info off you guys like:
is it mainly DH or DJ cos i personally ride dirt jumps but dont know whether to invest in a downhill bike?
and
Are the riding spots spread out pretty evenly or could i end up an hours drive away from the nearest spot if i pick the wrong place to live?
Cheers,
Andy
oh and have u guys heard of the bike brand 'Identiti'? because they're made in the UK and most americans havent heard of them etc, but they are pretty good (well i would say that because i have one )

I have just moved away from Whangarei, and I'm sure mark (Onerahi) will be along to give you all the good info shortly
No "DH" in the true sense of it, but some good gravity trails non the less. A DH bike would be overkill, something 6 inch that pedals is the go for an all rounder, or a do it all HT. I used to ride single speed most the time, so nothing is really steep as far as the trails go either. Some tech, but mostly flowy single track.
there are DJ's, and they are developing. the main biking area is 5 mins drive or 15 mins bike from down town, and is new. The areas trails were destroyed with logging, and new trails are just being built, though some are a few years old now. Because of the logging the trails are easy to build, but exposed to the harsh sun in summer. Stuff grows quick though, so shade is not too far away
There are other areas withing 20 mins ride of town to ride in (western hills, glenbervie). Quite a social scene as well, great bunch of basdrats they are.
welcome to vorb, welcome to NZ.

Hi Andy, Whangarei has a little bit of riding, it isn't a mecca by any means though. But there are a few well established places to build and ride (espeically Parihaka which has really come on in the last few years). You definitely do not need a DH bike. There are some djs around the place. Check out my website. I used to live up there. We started a DH/freeride club a few years ago, but everyone involved ended up moving away.
Luckily New Zealand is small so it is easy to get away to ride in other parts of the country.

Cheers guys thats really, really helpful was a bit unsure about the MTB scene in the northland but it seems pretty well established.
Oh and have you guys heard of (or have) 'Identiti' Bikes over there? Because i beleive they are pretty UK specific as i've never really seen any outside the UK? (just interested to know)

hey
identiti bikes are not that big here, prob more dmr products, but thats prob a distribution thing, whangarei has a few places to ride but the old story, u gotta build it to ride it, i have moved about an hour south of whangarei and wont be returning much to ride as i will be riding my own trails here (39 acres of native bush) is part of the land package attached to the house i rent.
so will have some riding options here. dj's and xc trails comin soon.
good luck with the move

Why are you moving to whangarei? didn't know dirtjumpers could fly that far. Trails here do suit a 6" trail bike, and some armour for the gorse.

That look like mad fun tooth fairy. I wish I had the land to be able to do that.
Is it a hardtail friendly track? Or do you need a heap of rear wheel bounce?

ummm, fully rigid=endo, hardtail rattles fillings out, much smoother on a full susser. only got a couple of small drops and one tiny gap so far. so its only the log ramps that put me off riding it on a hardtail.
