I found out there are mountain biking tracks in the Tairua Forest at whanga. I went to the information center and got a 1 month biking permit and map for $10 but didn't have time to go there. Has any one else been there? Whats it like?

Aparently there's an awesome set of bmx type dj's around there somewhere, but they've become rather overgrown. Don't know the legality of it all, but they sound pretty knarly.

went for a ride with a guy from there the other day he said there are heaps of trails from the mx riders that used to go up there (before they go banned) and a cool little loop out to an old gold mine and the local bike shop is pretty behind the mountainbiking in the area

I went up there in the summer. the map isnt much help apart from telling you a few landmarks and where the forest is. The trailhead if you can call it that is at the hut (top end of causeway road) Ive found a few tracks to the left and right of causeway and a bunch down below. Pretty decent single track although it may be short and suprisingly un overgrown.
