it doesn’t matter wheather you drive less and use less fuel, or drive the same amount but more efficiently and use less fuel.

not that driving is the biggest global use of fuel.

Wouldn't it make more sense for an environmentally and socially conscious military hardman of some description to blockage a large amount of oil, thus artificially reducing supply in the short term and driving up the price?

I think that that would make sense.

Iran has a vast amount of oil.
Bush has less than a year left to go out in a blaze of glory.

But Bush is doing what he swore he'd never do. Spending his lame duck years trying to be a middle east peacemaker (al la Bill Clinton). Naturally the locals are a bit cynical about it - and rightly so, not only is Bush a war mongering tosser - he's never suceeded at anything in his life.

So certain! I'd be very interested in an impartial, unbiased view of the social and environmental costs associated with using fossil or biofuel blend transport fuels.

An unbiased view would probably record a lowering of happiness of tequila drinkers, but a economic gain for the mexican farmers from this story:

Mexicans torch tequila fields for ethanol boom corn: http://www.reuters.com/article/environmentNews/idUSN2924142520070530
