New Zealand riders Sarah Walker and Marc Willers maintained their respective leads in the Oceania ranking series for UCI BMX in Australia yesterday.

Walker (Kawerau) finished second overall to Queensland’s Melissa Mankowski in muddy conditions on the Gold Coast, which was not decided until the final race.

Compatriot Willers (Cambridge) finished fifth in the elite men’s competition after dominating Friday’s racing while Victoria Hill (New Plymouth) finished runner-up in the junior women’s competition.

Queensland BMX rider, Jared Graves has his sights set firmly a medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics after winning the fifth round of the Oceania competition. Graves now gains valuable UCI points for Australia.

After racing in mud in the previous round last night, Graves was relieved with better track conditions after the disastrous wet and muddy track on Friday night..

Graves made the winning move on the first turn and was challenged by two of his QAS (Queensland Academy of Sport) teammates Michael ‘Tiger’ Robinson and Kamakazi.

Robinson and Kamakazi rode shoulder to shoulder but finished in second and third place respectively.

Willers could not repeat his win from Friday night’s round to finish fifth yesterday and will set his sights on the next round to be held in Melbourne in a fortnight.

The elite women race for points over three races and close racing meant any three riders could take the eventual win in the third and final race.

"It came down to the last race which is good. That’s what the girls need," explained Mankowski.
