A hot clear day greeted racers at the Arrowsmith Station in the Southern Alps in the first round of the new format of the "Race Series formerly known as the Nationals". The course was a 42 kilometre single "adventure race" lap featuring a massive climb, amazing scenery, and a whole lot of rocks.

First home in a time of 2:13:45 was the infamous Chris Burr who was riding a borrowed bike after being "encouraged" to enter that morning. Long time observers of Chris "Scratchy" Burr will note that the more random his entry the better he does - any coaches willing to try and turn this into a structured training programme?

Behind Chris was Tim Madgwick who took out Elite Men with a time of 2:23:20, Aaron Reardon was only 30 seconds behind in second and Dayle MacLaughlan third. Cathy Hamer took Elite Women with a time of 2:46:30 with Jeanette Gerrie 2nd and Brenda "Bob" Clapp 3rd.

I knew we should have entered him on a 16" girls BMX to even up the field a bit Huh

It has to be said that Tony Hogg from Dunedin* was absolutely flying, with a substantial lead on the rest of the pack around the halfway point. But from what I heard he got 4 punctures in the second half which lost him a hell of a lot of time.

*I'm pretty sure it was him - riding an Epic and moving about the same speed as Roadrunner.

Ow that hurt, i think i rode well attempted to ride the biggest ever rock garden or should that be rock forrest. That was just so hard, it turned into a race of survival. Id never seen so many people with flat tyres, remember kids if running tubeless run UST tyres especially on a rockie track. Nicely run event, the meal was nice even though i chucked it back up Laugh Out Loud
