Yarr. Went for my first ride in 3 months yesterday.
Ridings ok. Pumping hurts. Unclipping REALLY hurts.
Must try harder.

hello all,
yep Fosters Clearing is the biz for nice 60-75min climb and stunning free-fall return...exillarating(sp) stuff ...you'd be hard pressed to get any better flow .
Even though its a dual use track its hardly used by walkers...if you want, once you get to Fosters Clearing , hang a right and another 5-10min on takes you to the hut and that adds even more gravity assist...
the other really worthy trail is Whites Bay loop..get to whites bay, take trail that is on the Nth side ride up(thru bush) to road,right...along road a couple of hundred metres you'll come to sign saying Whites Bay loop, turn left into fire road and ride/push to the end of fire road. The trail proper starts here ...into beech forest, for me its mainly a push for the next 40-45minutes(steep) but if your real fit ,it can be ridden..once you get to the top the trail(with signage) right to Mt Robertson Peak, or left which is the way you wanna go...
Put pads on,drop your seat and hang on...a bit... rooty, windy, narrow, off camber,rocky..basically your dropping down the ridgeline pretty rapidly ...its lotsa fun...
halfway down it opens up a bit amongst some pines( abit up and down here) and then back into Manuka..fast ,narrow ,windy..careful...then you come out at a pylon..follow fire road down and left on to the tesraal...about 400m on, youll see sign on right pointing to Whites Bay...drop down into this Pines and pine needles..careful of walkers though..
follow track down to sea level and follow round to the left...your back at Whites bay
head to pub
ps. the WBL track is almost free of walkers..due to steepness and the fact its not a well groomed trail..

If youre doing the whites bay loop and youre looking for something a bit more tech turn right about half way down and go down into the Pukaka valley. Seems like its been cleared up abit lately as well

Cheers guys - I'll be bringing my bike home for Christmas and looking forward to scoping out some fresh (to me) tracks. Whites Bay sounds like the bizzo

If you're in an epic kind of mood, you can do the whole thing and end up at the pub in canvastown, on the other side of the Richmond ranges, but then you've gotta organise transport, and its a pretty big mission.
Incidentally, a pretty big mission which I'd be keen on a roadtrip from chch for in a few months.. |

Pukaka Valley is where DH is held sometimes, but the trail from WBL comes down right up the back of a "Deliverance" style farm...real feral...apologies if feral farmer is a vorber..

Ye i have to admit getting through the farm can be a pain in the esra to get through. Got blocked by a bloody horse last time i went down But ye in to the pukaka valley is well worth it, especially if you want a bit of variation on the whites bay loop

will try the descent into Pukaka then
Perhaps the trail should be called "Deliverance"....banjo music, squelling pigs, and men with mad eyes and beards...
I tried to ride up out of Pukaka over to WBay but gave up as it was pretty damp, steep and narrow...riding pass the last house gave me the tihss....felt i was being watched..
also I fell in the creek(near a rusted hull of a boat) as I scared a massive female pig and litter lying in the sun next to the trail...this pig squealled and lifted out of the ground right next to me....I nearly shat my pants and fell over into the water..
my mate laughed his ass off..
Cheers Bob...
PM me if ya wanna ride up that way sometime...

Ye my mate tried to pat one of those pigs cause he thought they might be friendly...
changed his mind pretty quick
But ye its pointless trying to ride out of the pukaka, only way to ride that track is down i reckon
