ridden the track a couple of times-both in summer or Autumn, and even then it was a bit greasy, but the picture you posted about shows it was really muddy down on the tram bit near the start of the track. However you ride through it, it is going to chew it up and cause more erosion
Not riding on tracks when they are muddy is a bloody good idea, as it should be the trails should last a bit longer. How often do you think DOC goes up and fixes this and other trails up? I very much doubt they have the money or resources to fix tracks up all the time.
Maybe winter means thinking about where you ride, and you might even have to go road riding!

Most of the track was in good shape, the main issue was the build up or organic material on top and that just happens with lack of use!
A couple of places had developed water ruts due to the camber of the track being insufficient to allow the water run off the side and instead run down the track.
There were a couple of trees down from the wind, these we cleared.
The mud patches are all due to small creeks that run across the tracks. Unfortunately the bridges that have been put in are far to short in many cases to cross the complete area, thus the mud patches have developed. IMO they would be better off removing the bridges and ensuring the each areas drained correctly as the material at the bottom of puddle seem very firm. This would lead to each becoming a ford.
Overall my opinion is that the track was well designed and close to being an all weather track, however given it's isolation I wouldn't expect DOC to put more the the bare minimum of effort in to it's maintenance.
Oh, and I enjoy riding it immensely as I suspect did both of the people that were there walking it
