Ambrose: Although this isn't one of the most action packed vids in the comp It is my favorite. Just the fact that this guy shot it and rode in it and put enough thought into his compositions and shots to give him the effect that he got is brilliant. It is really well done and it give the viewer the sense that he is really racing himself, ha ha and the fact that he took a wrong turn and had to double back makes me laugh..nice work.

Chris: Excellent concept that has been cleanly executed, editing was flawless, as was the cinematography with well exposed, locked down shots. Soundtrack was very fitting. From a spectators point of view xc isn't the most captivating discipline however this video is an explicit exception. Very refreshing.

Jason: Great ambition, great concept and great execution.

Toni: Every time I watch a video or film I'm looking for something new and original (to me) with filming and or editing, this one brought me with both. I'm not a huge XC fan but this video gets big creative points from me... I can't wait to try his crisscross dissolve technique for myself.

Warwick: Cool concept and execution, although I was waiting for the climax at the end. Would have been funny if you had straight-armed yourself off the bike to take the win or something.

Chris : Editing was amazing and very creative, having experimented with rotoscoping in the past I can appreciate how much effort must have gone into this. It was nice that time was taken to mix in the audio as well, it really added to the animation.

Jason: Ambitious animated technique used. Good understanding of traditional camera techniques to make your film work, and nice sound design with the actual noise from a bike included. Great music and overall duration for this film.

Toni: This was my favorite because it's so rare to see this style of animation anymore, and I've never seen it applied to Mt. biking.... I wish I thought of it first. Also I'm a sucker for a good instrumental. Great job on this one.

Warwick: Effin' brilliant. I'm jaded on bike videos in general, but this got me stoked. Contact me and I'll get this in the next MTBFilms movie.

Ambrose: This was my second favorite vid ..just for the overall style..music( I am A bit of a redneck for sure and I was born and raised in the boondocks...ha ha) layout, riding and camera work. Its always good to incorporate camera movement into your shots. When done well it can elevate your work way above the rest. But it has to be subtle the viewer shouldn't notice it, they will just notice a more pro look.If you watch any movie almost every shot has camera movement in it to lead the viewer deeper into the story .The cine did a good job on this in this project and I know It is one f the harder things to do when filming action sports because you never really know where the subject will end up in the frame. One thing he can try is on his static shot a slight pull in or push out on the frame gives it that look. THe long drawn out shots were a bit much for me (ie. the nose manuals )But the follow cam was done well. Also When filming one subject over time...try and get them to wear the same clothes...it ads to continuity, ha ha I know its hard most get ruined or lost but I have actually resorted to taking the clothes from some riders to make sure they have the same the next time, but sometimes it can't be helped.

Chris : Cinematography was excellent - colors were superb, as was the boom. A unique interpretation of the ‘earth' theme but well executed. Overall the video had a nice feel to it and flowed well, although that song soon started to get on my nerves.

Jason: You choose a strong piece of music to edit to and really good Cinematography. Make sure you try grading in your next film.

Warwick: Nice to see some effort put into camera movement. I also like the long followshots. I was getting a little bored of the riding, but the camera work kept me interested.

Ambrose: Great job on the intro and effects on this one.Time and thought went into it and the effects were not to over the top. One of the hardest things to do is shoot 2 or more people on a trail. One guy is always faster and rides with more style than the rest and trying to keep them close is hard.I either make the fastest guy go last or shoot them in separate sections of the trail. The last thing you want when you are filming multiple riders is big gaps between them in the frame. You guys pulled it off but I would much rather watch the one fast ripper alone.

Chris : The 3d/motion graphics at the start were really well done. Cinematography was clean, shots were steady, well exposed and framed. Music was the only thing that let it down for me, not feeling the song at all. But overall a well-rounded video with consistent editing and quality filming.

Jason: Some tight ideas in this video, with great titles and graphics. Solid edit and a nice range of camera skills in display here. Well done.

Ambrose: Some neat editing in this piece..liked the music and you can never go wrong when you use real time sound over the music. Must say not a huge fan of the devil horns in front of the camera haha. But I am stoked to see people having fun and trying things when filming and edtiting. You never know how it will look until you try it.Also I like when they showed him landing his 3 barspin and the emotions behind that...Its always good to see that. You can see the rider seem to progress as the clip goes on which is so key to building a good segment.THe kid kinda reminds me of watching Tremblay ride ..i hope he doesn't smell like him..

Chris : Loved the city shots at the start, very atmospheric. Song was excellent and editing was creative, my only complaint is that some of the shots were a bit shaky which was a little distracting. But some really sick lines and solid riding.

Jason: Nice start and then a few good moments through out, no real ending, but overall a solid film.

Warwick: Some cool edits in here, but it's not consistent.

Ambrose: I like this idea of riding after the rain..maybe because we seem to do a lot of that in Vancouver. The rain at the beginning sets the mood for the rest of the piece and love the close up drips.Nice use of reflections in puddles..the music doesn't seem to contribute to the somber mood of a soaked skate park.To me A wet skate park is a sad thing.MAinly to sketchy on the transitions to ride.A bit of the exposures were to underexposed ed try using the camera on manual and just framing in the one spot instead of panning also try and stay away from to much repetition in shots...

Chris : Impressive editing, good use of time-lapse cinematography although I felt that some of the shots were a little too long. Filming was solid, you just need to work on sorting those underexposed shots. Great song which fitted the riding well. Overall, a first-rate entry and good interpretation of the theme.

Jason: I enjoyed the overall feel of this film, the editing was clean, the cinematography was solid, and this film had one of the strongest storylines so far. Tidy graphics too. Choice!

Ambrose: Like the feel of just riding with your friends and having a day out with the boys. love the fact that it showed crashes

Chris : Filming and editing were both above average. Good use of linking up shots so that the whole video flowed - an excellent showcase of the track. The song was a nice change from the usual mountainbike soundtrack. My only criticism would be the montage at the start, which I personally felt to be a little too fast.

Jason: Good edit with safe camera cover. A good piece of music for a film, as it has rise and flows. Simple but tidy graphics.

Ambrose: I like the way that they Intro the riders..nice use of something other than graphics to do that .Also The talking give more of a story to it more intimate.Unfortunatley sound is the hardest part to get right in video and the buzz annoyed me and unfortunately even the pro cameras don't always have great sound, and again the tripod would be nice, and try and avoid zooming in and out to much.If you do it should be barely noticeable ...like to try and keep a rider the same size in a frame for a bit longer.Once a shot is set up it shouldn't be zoomed to change it.

Chris : Some creative titles. Filming was a bit shaky but there were a few good shots, especially the silhouettes.

Jason: Nice to see some humor with the out-take at the end.

Ambrose: Great work on the POV shots and the follow cam from the vehicle. Love the feel you get when you shoot someone from a moving car - you get a sense of the speed. I must say I don't like the mirrors and parts of the door invading the shots, the person filming needed to lean out the window a bit more..and the use of the tripod in the static shots would have greatly upped the production value. When cutting stuff it is good to cut the dead space out of the front of clips and the ends..unless they are there for dramatic purposes but most of the ones that i noticed in this clip were not. A few frames can make a huge difference especially when cutting to fast paced music.

Chris : Shots from the car made a nice change from static angles.

Jason: Nice skills from your riders, but not enough thought put into the actual filmmaking. This video needed a few more ideas to give it a lasting impression, and to make it different to other free-ride films already out there.

Ambrose: Everyone who ones a camera should own a tripod and use it.. ha ha, and when shooting in trees please do it on a cloudy day.It is so hard to get consistent colour and white balance in spotty light, and when filming Let your subject enter the frame and exit with out panning to much. Makes for quicker more dynamic shots.Ideally to keep the flow each shot should enter one side and exit the other consistently .It makes it look like the rider is going in one direction.

Chris : Finally someone not afraid to use hip hop in their video! Some of the shots were a bit shaky and the sudden changes in exposure were somewhat distracting. However the video still had reasonable flow showcasing the dh track.

Jason: I felt this video tried to sell it's self on the skill of the rider being shot, not the skill of the filmmaker. I think there are a lot more good ideas that could have been included in this film to give it a higher rating.

Warwick: Tripod please! Needs more care taken in the cinematography area (filmers' bike in the shots, etc.)

Crumbs!

I'm so stoked about this - I was incredibly nervous when I posted my entry, I had "Oh my god what if no-one gets it and everyone slams it cause it's just me riding XC" running through my head...

Big thanks to everyone who voted, and of course to the judges for their work and their comments (much appreciated). Double Thumbs Up

Also big ups to Tama for organising and running the comp (and to the sponsors for providing the awesome prizes!). Big Grin

Alrighty then - back to lying on the beach for the rest of the week (so long as the weather plays the game Crazy )...
