The story as I understand it is:

The track crosses private land on the Wellington side and was accessable to MTB'ers providing you got permission first.

This together with contact details was spelt out in the Kennetts book and council pamphlets on Monutain Biking. It was also discsussed from time to time on mountain biking forums.

Eventually the land owners got tied of monutainbikers not getting permission and doing stupid things on their land so withdrew their permission.

I think you can still ride the Waiwarapara side from the bridges to the top and return. or I could be wrong.

I haven't ridden the track. I understand the Waiwarapapa side is a brutal climb.

Yeah, 95% sure the Kennets describe it as the nastiest climb in greater Wellington region. I've been meaning to attempt it, but fortunately have always managed to find excuses not to...
