It's the day of reckoning today as we switch to Vorb 6.9. This is the first major software change in 5 years so things are bound to get exciting.

Shortly all users will be logged out of Vorb. You will still be able to browse, you just won't be able to post content or access your Account or Private Messages.

I am using the incredibly responsible IT project management method of J.F.T.F.S. as Vorb 6.9 is nowhere near finished. But I reckon there is enough functionality to keep you all amused and give us an idea of what we need to work on first.

So when the new site goes across it will be missing quite a few features and not all of the content will have been migrated (mainly the photo galleries.) But hey, we're working on it, and I reckon the worst thing that could happen is I get lynched by 90,000 Vorbii - and I'm sure that could get quite kinky if I played my cards right.

Wish me luck - see you on the other side!

OK, as many of you will have just noticed you can (hopefully) no longer logon to Vorb or post content.

We have "frozen" the content so we can start to migrate it to the new server down in Christchurch.

Woo ha!

There's quite literally gigabytes of data flowing between the old server in Auckland and the new server in Christchurch right now.

Chunking through over 2.1 million pieces of content takes a bit of work!

I've got the database across and am running some clean up scripts across it before we start migrating it into the new system.

A bit of context Tongue it - lyrics from "Blank Slate" by "The National" Music

I was home entertaining guests
I fell off the chair and cracked open my head
Bees flew out and they flew up their skirts 'cause they wanted to travel the world

I was home entertaining guests
I fell off the chair and cracked open my head
Bees flew out and they flew up their skirts 'cause they wanted to travel the world
But I keep it upstairs

Keep it upstairs for the grand finale
I keep it upstairs

Gonna be a blank slate, gonna wear a white cape
But I keep it upstairs

Gonna jump out of a cake with my heart on a string
Keep it upstairs
Keep it upstairs
Keep it upstairs

I go out looking in parked cars
For somebody famous to kidnap and love
Beat off the army with a tennis racket

I go out looking in parked cars
For somebody famous to kidnap and love
Beat off the army with a tennis racket
That's my whole plan
But I keep it upstairs

Keep it upstairs for the grand finale
I keep it upstairs

Gonna be a blank slate, gonna wear a white cape
But I keep it upstairs

Gonna tackle young girls off their beautiful bikes
But I keep it upstairs
Keep it upstairs
Keep it upstairs

Oh no, I thought I'd be by now
My head is a buzzing three-star hotel, oh no
Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
But I keep it upstairs

Keep it upstairs for the grand finale
I keep it upstairs

Gonna be a blank slate, gonna wear a white cape
But I keep it upstairs

Gonna jump out of a cake with my heart on a string
Keep it upstairs
Keep it upstairs
Keep it upstairs

Oh no, I thought I'd be by now
My head is a buzzing three-star hotel, oh no
Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
Nowhere did I thought I'd be by now
My head is a buzzing three-star hotel, oh no
Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no

I'm into part of the process which pretty much involves staring at a screen while it migrates all 2.1 million pieces of content (and your PMs etc.) into the new system.

What could possibly go wrong!? Well lots as it happens, which is a bugger as I'd love to be able to walk away for a few hours.

Step 2 of 28 right now - don't hold your breath.

...watching this is more exciting than watching multi day cricket*

* no I'm not being sarcastic - it is far more exciting than watching multi day cricket, unfortunately it's still more boring than watching paint dry
