For a while now the Wellington Downhill scence has seemed like it's starting too die out, with people giving up. Hardly any races ever on, never any news or people building wee downhill runs anywhere. I know it takes people to organise events and stuff, and I know I dont do any work there, but latly it feels like the wellington DH scence is dead, well thats just my views on the matter.

Harry.

Agreed

I got my new bike thinking yay, downhiling all the time, to find out most of my downhilling mates have given up or left wellington or something.

Well, you've pretty much answered it yourself. The "scene" really relies on people being involved. We still are, but with a relatively small number of people volunteering, we're pretty much focussing on the things that we're interested in.

Between vehicle rules for long gully and the (temporary) loss of the maidstone track, there is a lack of dh-specific tracks in the region.

We're working with the council on getting a track from the wind turbine down to the tip, but, as with everything, it's going to take a bit of time to get built up.

As for the news, there's lots. If you're a member of the welly MTB club you'll get newsletters every month with updates on what we're up to. You've got to be involved to make a scene - sitting around for something to magically appear is not a winning proposition...

Its not something that's unique to Welly, that's for sure.

It's a pity DH isn't more like BMX, where a lot more of the parents get stuck in.

But there's still plenty on. We're out riding (up in the gully, or in the skatepark, or elsewhere around the country) most weekends. Last night we did a shuttle run on the cable car, which was mint. Well, it probably would have been better if I didn't take us down a completely dark singletrack to the top of boucott street with no lights (apart from mine), but you get the idea.

All it takes is people getting involved. And since right now there isn't too much in the way of help coming my way, I tend to focus on doing stuff with and for the people that do give a hand.

It's like karma. If you help out, you'll find that you get invited to all the stuff that happens.

You wanna race then?

Oh, and speaking of DH dying, it is, like, winter. There's generally not a hell of a lot of stuff going on over winter riding/racing wise...

Mostly it's a hell of a long way to drive for people in welly to go and dig. It's a damned fine location, a massive hill, and heaps of potential. It's just that (speaking personally) i would rather build in welly because it doesn't involve me using a car to get out there.

Also, the wainui trail project kinda sucked up all of the keen builders out that way. Believe me, it's still in the pot being thought about/worked through, but we're putting our priority on trying to get welly-city-based stuff underway first.

Oh ricky - speaking of old-school, can you remember the route of the old karori park DH track? I'm going in that way over the next couple of weeks to try and re-find it all (with a view to re-establishing it).

Yeah, that is kind of the opposite for me, im really keen to come help dig at long gully but its a long way to go when there is always digging in Wainui.

Still better than Auckland, you'll be fine. Welly has hills to ride down!
