I'm super ssiped right at the moment.
Traveling to work on my road bike down cashel street going 30-35kmph and this lady backs out her drive right in front of me, I swerve into the middle of the road to avoid he and my front tyre on my road bike blows out! Luckily I manage to control this and pull to the side of the road.....
Being sick of getting regular flats on my road bike I forked out and bought a brand new pair of Schwarble Stevio plus almost puncture proof tyres.... well so much for that idea, I now have a cut in my tyre about 1cm long!
I have emailed the CCC with my concerns and advised that they need to sweep the road for glass and you get back the usual yeah yeah sod off responce.
I lived in Melbourne for 1 year and biked to work everyday 70k round trip and not 1 puncture, my friend who came to live here from London said they used to sweep the streets every morning at 4 to make sure they were clean....
What does the CCC do? Give us cycle lanes full of glass, pot holes, man hole covers, cracks etc... The state of the roads is terrible here to be honest, not very cycle friendly, and they are trying to get everyone to cycle in this age of not wanting to use cars.
I found out the Green party's headquarters are down the road from work, so going to go see them tomorrow about this. i think if anyone could help it's bound to be them....
Is anyone else here fed up with the roads in Christchurch or is it just me?

It's all over NZ, dude. It's tihs but councils don't give a rats as far as I can tell. The worst culprits in Welli are the freaking recycling guys - every morning after they've been around the roads are littered with glass...

It's funny you know, down my street they resealed it with chip seal and let the shingle on the roads for ages, real dodgy on a roadbike! I rung them up and asked when they were going to sweep it and they said "Meh" told them boyracers were doing skids in the shingle and they were "Oh we'll snd some people out there straight away!" and later that day they had swept the roads?!?!?!?! Don't worry about the poor cyclist being in danger of falling off, as long as the boyracers ain't doing skids in it that's all that matters!

It seems to be a bigger problem in Christchurch. I've had 3 punctures due to broken glass in less than 6mnths. Honestly, at every intersection their seems to be glass to avoid. I can only compare to my previous cycle commutes in Auckland - where it was never really a problem - maybe Welly is just as bad. From what I can tell, the majority of glass on the roads in Christchurch seems to be the result of car accidents (both major and minor) not being been cleaned up properly.

Dude, Wed I got a puncture on the way to work, this morning get up and the rear is flat again, put in another spare tube, ride up road, tire goes soft, ride home and I have no spares so I had to get dropped off at work. All glass shrards. I am going to get either a CST Flatfighter or an Armadillo for the rear as recommended somewhere on here..

Hey i live and chch and have cant remember the last time i got a puncture and i cycle to work everyday. Surpose you just need to look where you are going 
...........................No doubt tomorrow i will get a flat 
oh and thats running specialized fatboys slicks on my MTB

The Schwarble Stevio pluses are ment to be the most puncture resistant tyres for roadie bikes.... but when the ground is damp it's hard to see the glass and at 110odd kg's i'm not a fly weight who breezes over glass. I'm going to invest in some of that puncture resistant tape that goes between the tube and tyre as well.....
Still the point is the streets aren't looked after.... 1 year and thousands of k's of riding in melbourne on cheap maxxis roadie tyres and no flats compared to constant flats in chch with expensive puncture proof tyres that ain't so puncture proof as I found out..... [/list]

I used to run 1.5 slicks on my MTB but they were kinda thick and the rubber was quite tough to... I never flated on them.

I fitted armadillos front and rear a few weeks ago after I picked up a slow leak. Not that I puncture often but I don't carry tools / spares with me so a flat could cost me upwards of an hours walking.
They're such a basdrat to get onto the wheel that I really hope they're as good as they're claimed to be so I never have to remove them!

Passed a guy the on the way to work a couple of mornings ago (in my 4wd drinking coffee) changing a tyre on his roadie, saw the same guy on the other side of the road in almost the same place changing a tyre on my way home.
I think that would be a sucky day's cycle commuting, puts me off getting a roadie to ride to work on.

I've had three flats in the last month. Two were glass punctures, the third appears to be the mystery tiwkcuf at work who thinks it's amusing to let my front tyre down 
The glass is usually bottle glass from what I can tell, most of the time it's avoidable but sometimes, not so much. Grr.
Before the recent spate tho it had been a good 6 months tho so I'm not too bothered. I'm running Proraces on the bike, previously using CST Flat fighters for about the same ratio of punctures to not.
For the enjoyment I get out of cycling and how much cheaper and less frustrating it is than sitting in traffic, I'll happily change the odd tyre (tho not so happily I'd do it every day)

I think its a weather related thing. Similarly all through our long dry summer I had no problems, then comes winter and it's happening all the time, I think maybe the rain washes the glass out of the gutters to the edge of the road where bikes travel most.
