took 5 min to load the high resolution one. was a bit laggy for me aswell. Low res was better on my comp
thats on basic slingshot broadband (256/128k), pretty average graphics card and stuff don't help either

Both loaded really quickly, but even on the second (and third) runs through the high quality one was a bit jerky (my machine is quite slow at times though)
I see that both the files are identical, so its obviously the flash conversion where the added compression is added (to the normal quality one). I'm all for the higher quality streaming, but to be fair perhaps if it's going to cost Vorb a lot of dough, it could be tagged as being a higher quality upload - and for users to feel free to download the non-flash version if they want the higher def version. Perhaps experience tells you that users aren't as likely to download a file and watch, they'd rather watch something streaming? I'd presonally rather download it, and then watch at my leisure without chewing bandwidth multiple times. I know in the past I've uploaded a couple of my vids at higher bitrate (and resolution) and told certain people to download the non-flash file to enhance their viewing experience!
On another side note - I reckon that quicktime files are handled much more efficiently by the flash converter - everything that's uploaded in .mov runs really well on the flash player compared to stuff in wmv. Just look at anything by Cam, Toby, or the Dysto boys for example - I'll happily watch them on "fill screen" mode in the flash player - but I find stuff in wmv generally needs to be viewed in "orignal size" to not look overy pixelated. I must look into compression to mov format...

What are you using? h264?
Encoding something recently I had issues with still images not compressing at all politely in a montage section, but with a slight Gaussian blur on them (2px) in compressed and streamed a treat. |
Hey there I used the H.264 codec (through quicktime) and used 2048kbps bitrate it took quite a few attempts to get the quallity/size ratio perfect but im very happy with the results. as for images; compression can be weird if you are using interlaced footage because images are obviously whole frames (this causes some issues post compression) but it can be worked around  probably as im sure you know usually just a case of trial and error. H.264 for president!

High-res FTW! You really notice it in the details and the fades between shots.
On 10mb Telstra cable connection so both downloaded quickly and smoothly.

Normal quality looks fine to me.
Both loaded staight away without any buffering but at home it would be a different story as Slingshot broadband is slow.
