It's not the Earth's rotation that causes gravity - it's the Earth's mass.

Im aware of that, but thats irrelevant in this case. Im talking about the atmosphere's momentum/friction with the earth ...

I was talking to Spokes. Wink

Isn't this what the Mayan calendar predicts will happen in 2012? Or that the earth is going to be thrown off its axis and spin faster or slower or something?

Maya's still struggling with motherhood - I don't think she's got time to make a calendar. Huh

It's already happened. Velikovsky wrote a book about it. Also, see the Bible.

Oooooh, just thought of another thing ... Would the oceans spill out of their places, all over all the land?

Big asteroid, the perfect size, and weight hitting in the right spot from the opposite direction?

It would get sucked up into the atmosphere along with everything else on land minus conspiracy theorists who will already be safe in their underground bunkers.

My reasoning: As we speak, the earth is rotating on axis, with the equator moving at about 400 m/s (400 x 3.6 = 1440 km/hr). However, the atmosphere spins along with the earth, and so if the earth stopped in an instant, would the atmosphere's momentum keep it spinning, thus moving past us at 1440 km/hr (at least initially)?

I dunno. What do you guys think?

Y'all being in one of them hoighty-toighty big city-folk physics class oughtta been able to figure that y'all are gonna need one heck of a big ol' force to stop the earth from spinning in an instant. Not gonna happen bub.

Y'all are just about three pounds of stupid in a two pound sack is what I reckon.

Interestingly, Galileo had a theory of the tides that worked something like what you are imagining. He thought that the velocity of the Earth's orbit around the Sun and the Earth's rotation were additive, and so when a spot on the Earth was counteracting the orbital velocity, the oceans would slosh into a crest. Smile

Eh? He's not saying the Earth WILL stop spinning, he's imagining what might happen IF IT COULD stop spinning. I don't think it makes him stupid - I think it shows he has imagination and a questing mind.

And writing in a "Southern" accent just makes you look like a kcid...
