it dosnt need to be easy to ride fast - most of the stuff up the park seems to be made to ride flat out. the track would prob last longer and be more fun if it was twisty and through some trees.
PS Have a look at the bottom half of Pitfichie DH in Scotland on you tube or google images (the SDA in 06 was really wet). The track (built by a fellow known as "Special" and his mates) was built with heavy rock armour (lots of rocks added before and after it was muddy). If there was a wet track you can make it better by lobbing the odd boulder into the mud.

Ok then, how about this for an idea then. If you lot are serious then lets ALL meet up the hill and go for a reccy on foot to try and find a suitable track and then present it to Nick and Co with the Pro's and Con's , if we get approval then lets get onto it
For the short term lets make a short list for the reccy.
What do you think ?
Oh yeah - it would be nice to meet some fellow DHers to

Looks good and looks like what we would be out to achieve. Yep armoring would be the plan but requires lots of nice sized rocks which tend to be few and far between in vic park. And people decide that they slow them down too much and remove them too. Definatly somthing to investigate tho.
In reference to you first statment JS - the group of people who built tracks in vic park has recenty changed. many of the old tracks were built straight line("speedy") with corners at the end. We are trying to add more corners and flow but weve only been at it less than 12 months. In that time 4 new tracks have been built (Pons, brakefree, new new dazzas and the unnamed in gums) analong with several major changes (hospital corner, rock ride berore creek gap, etc). Were always looking for places to improve so if you do have any ideas turn up to a dig day or email tracks[at]gravitycanterbury.org.nz, or me personally at jonos[at]gravitycanterbury.org and well look at you idea and set about doin it.

Yep. im free on saturday. Definatly should investigate fence line (i did have other plans for that but people seem to want a wet track...) and the dodgy exit track.

Saturday could be a go. We are looking at OPTIONS, fence line is not a final choice but one worth consideration thats all - what did you have in mind for it dh-winner?
Lets just do a reccy and see what has potential - gotta start somewhere aye

yea the 2nd vid is the bottom of the track thats all built with rocks. I was racing at that race - the 2nd race runs were the wettest ive ever raced in (and i saved 10 secs from my first run).
the 1st vid is the top section on the moor - the dood crashes just as he gets to the good bit
Lets go up for a look on sat someone will have to dhow me where to go or meet me somewhere simple as im not sure which tracks are which - done a bit of work on brake free but thats about it.... hope its nice and dry

Sounds like an awsome idea, I love riding in the mud and it would be awsome to have a bouldered trail that can take the muddy beating but the track is still super fun in the wet.
*HIJACK
Anyway on another note, how many km's/minutes are the port hill tracks from the uni campus?
