Hey
Great site, just joined and spent a few hours browsing.
I have a GT ZuM 3.0 that I love commuting on around JAFA land. I have just returned home after five months exchange in Ireland where I was commuting everyday on a colleagues spare GT with rigid front forks. So I'm thinking I am carrying way to much weight and a completely unneccesary set of front suspension forks on my ZuM. Any thoughts on ripping them out and going rigid?
CroMo, Alum or carbon?
Supplier or shop in the 09 where I can go for advice or browse a good selection?

Cheers in advance.

I'd say cr-mo or maybe carbon, that said on NZ roads, I'd keep the suspension forks

or you can whip out the springs which would get rid of maybe 400-500g(if it has a spring in each leg) and make it a rigid, all without costing a cent Double Thumbs Up

doing that kind of thing does do funny things to the geometry too, so remember to readjust your seat and handle bar angles

Literally drop it, from about 10-15 feet above. then record the results.

A good Cr-mo fork with tapered tips can flex over bumps and smooth out your ride some-what. Carbon forks are expensive and if your only utility cycling then you can put your money elsewhere. If carbon chips then it can easily fail and being just a bike for everyday use then something more durable should be used. Cr-mo forks will be heavier but far more comfortable

Also go single speed/fixed gear or both to add to the simplicity of the bike.

I have two fully rigid bikes and love them - very very good for commuting too Smile

One has carbon (Pace) forks the other cromo. If you can find some Kona Project rigid cromos you'll be set Double Thumbs Up

If I was using it for just or even mainly commuting I would definatly move to rigids. Lighter and less to go wrong.

Its not like the suspension that comes on commuter bikes really does anything anyway.
