FFS, hope they pull through.

I've had plenty of close encounters going through there when continuing north rather than going off the off ramp. Vehicle seem to think it's fine to overtake a cyclist and turn left....

F&*(^% hell. I just got off the phone with Mum. I knew it wouldn't be Gav - kinda think I would know something like that just cos...

That is way too close to home - I was riding there nearly every day before I left - it's just down the road from home, had to bash on a ute one day that cut Gav off pretty badly.

Over here it's all backwards, but there is zero agression towards cyclists or other drivers. What is wrong with our people???

I just came through there. The Petone offramp was closed so went past and over the over bridge over the railway line. The cyclist had taken the offramp, made it across into the right hand lane and come around the right hand downhill bend. The 6*4 articulated truck must have then overtaken the cyclist on the bend. The MTB & I thought the rider too was covered with a blanket on the outside of the apex of the bend. The cops were inspecting the trucks left hand driving wheels outside the fencing place.
Gives you a really nasty feeling

stuff updated and saying the cyclist is dead Sad RIP

thingone is right.. this is way out of control. they will spend huge money on national speed campaigns etc. but where is the money being spent to help keep cyclists safe. As the worst thing about all of this, the cyclist is not speeding or drinking or overtaking, it's driver (driven or parked car) lack of attention.

i honestly struggling to comprehend two deaths in one day.

I can only hope this inattentive driving (at best) is fully condemned in tomorrows Dominion from well up high: police, council, government etc. Like you Joel (and others), I cannot believe this... Sad

We really need to start making some noise about this issue, in govt and the LTSA.

RIP Dude.. I can only hope some good will come out of this absolute tragedy.

All I've got to say is move in to the middle, don't let the basdrats even try to get past at intersections or sharp corners, they can wait, it won't gnikcuf kill them...

I just called CAN's media liaison guy. They are putting out a press release tomorrow morning, despite the awkwardnesses of "capitalising" on tragedy.
