Vodafone are also no longer SIM locking phones. Phones in shops that still carry the locked sticker can be unlocked for free, phones already purchased can be unlocked for free also. Customers who have already paid $50 for the phone to be unlocked can claim it back too.
Vodafone actually listened to the customers and the commerce commission, something that that other telco has never done except when forced.

Now thats looking pretty - I like the auto-upload flickr idea..... there is a wireless keyboard that you can plug in, so that solves that problem.....
looks nice - although im not sure about its browsing capabilities like the blackberry, and its not windows based OS....
A mate and I have been playing around with an N95 - using freely available software (Nokia Sports Tracker and geotagging add-ins) we have been able to log a ride, take photos and upload it to the Nokia site - where you get a route map and the photos in the right places on the route. It also tags video. Can then download the route as a kml file for display in GE etc. Web browsing seems OK, but an internet cafe is by far and away the cheapest way of doing that anyway.
It also works really well for sending the photos direct to Flickr, where they are automatically geocoded. And if you want to get really into it, you can send them to Flickr and have them automatically posted on your Blogger blog, with the original email containing all the title and body text you want - so go for a ride, upload the route+photos+blog it - How web 2.0 do you want to be?
If you want to do this in the UK then take your unlocked phone to 3 and get their basic PAYG sim + data, or try T-Mobile. Roaming in Europe isn't cheap (especially for data) but it is coming down and you may be able to get a European SIM if you will be in one place long enough.
If you want to spend a few bucks you can use the N95 with TomTom software and maps as a satnav.
iPhone doesn't do GPS (it uses cell and wifi to get a rough location, which can actually be faster... until you don't have a good connection) and it is always using data on the network. Nice big screen and great UI though.
Thanks spg - thats just the kind of info ive been looking for on the N95 - I really like the idea about the upload to flickr!
I've also heard good reports from various hikers using the N95 for blogging long trips inc. photo's etc.
