Look south towards that old volcano type thingy.
Ride towards it then up around but not thru Paranoid
Do this until your legs fell slightly heavier than normal.
That said make your way to Bike HQ Road on Columbo St downtown.
Buy several garments and accesories.
Then find slightly overweight man behind desk named Hamish Fergison and if poked and proded he will tell you everything you need to know
Otherwise just PM Fergie on here.

What sort of distance are you looking for? Hills or no Hills?

Banks peninsula is great for cycling. Once you get into the bays you will have heaps of fun.

Long Bays is a common ride. Head to Gebbies Pass which is on the way to Akaroa go through Gebbies Pass to Teddington and then left to Lytelton and up Evan pass down into Sumner. 75 km if you go the around the base of the hills. For a proper map search for the Festival of Cycling website.

Short Bays. Go up Dyers Pass down into Governers and left to Lytelton and up Evans pass down into sumner. 40 - 45km I think.

Summit Road. Any of the passes mentioned above will get you there.

If you get lost. Just follow one of the hundreds wearing lycra and you will get back to town eventually. Thats what I did when I first started.

Out Ashley Gorge way is good.

For any other flat rides..... well your in canterbury so take your pick of country road.

50 to 100ks would be good.
As many hills as possible would also be good.
Whats the safest and easiest way to get from northwood to the port hills on a bicycle without getting lost?

well avoiding Johns Rd and the Main North Rd/Papanui would be sane (busy busy) but that mean more backstreet navigating....

most direct route is main north rd / papanui rd / around the park (park tce) and exit down antiqua st / strickland st - which merges with columbo st just before the hills

however I'd be wanting life insurance and ninja skills to ride main north/papanui during the busy times of the day

You could take a slightly longer way and go via Cranford Street to Bealey then along Durham St or Barbadoes to the hills if you want to avoid Main North Road/Papanui near Northlands Mall cos it's diabolical. I don't think it's too bad up to the intersection of Cranford and Main North though, there's lots of traffic but more space than through Papanui.
Depending on where in Northwood you are, you could cut across to Marshlands and head townwards that way? Not as direct but somewhat less death-defying..

other option would be to get to gardiners rd via Hussey Rd (the only non-main road out of belfast heading west), then either head in to papanui via harewood rd (missing the mall which is a killing zone) or carry on thru to wairakei rd and take it down to idris rd / straven rd / clarence st / barrington st (which again spits you out at the base of the hills between hackthorne and dyers)

If I went via marshland then what would be the best way to get to the hills from there?

also Ive heard there are two main training bunches, (the palms and one at bridge street). What are they like in comparison to each other?

either have to wiggle your way across the centre of town, or brave the ring road and end up in sumner (then head up either evans pass or mt pleasant)

they're the main flat bunch rides heading north - there's a lot more heading out around the hills (including the infamous tuesday morning long bays ride Double Thumbs Up )
