New Zealand Police
INFRINGEMENTS
PO Box 9147,
Wellington.

16 April 2008

OPEN LETTER CC New Zealand Cycle Blogs.

Re : Infringement Notice PN6731625

Can you please confirm that Demerit points are applied to individual motor vehicle licences for offense found under S.40 transport act 1998 and R.4 Offenses Penalties Regs 1999 & 4.1 (1) (a) Road user rule 2004 against acts committed while riding a cycle ?

If yes can you confirm that an individual’s motor vehicle licence would be suspended for accumulation of demerit point offences achieved while riding a cycle (assuming 100 points within 2 years) ?

Should 100 demerit points be reached within 2 years do the New Zealand police think that the right to ride a cycle on the road should be suspended ?

So basicaly you're asking since you can get demerit points on a bike, if you obtain more than 100 in 2 years then you should ne suspended from riding a bike and driving a vehicle?

I would have thought that was already the case. Except that its extremely hard to police...

Just the same as motor vehicles, cop drives past, see's someone swerving their bike all over the cycle lane, pulls over and tickets them for dangerous driving or sometihs

I think the query is to do with incurring demerit points while riding a cycle, yet only being prevented from driving a car when the demerit points add up... But I can't be sure Blush

Do cyclists get demerit points for riding their bikes not in the cycle lane when there is one there?

Sorry to be pointing out the obvious, but I'm assuming that this is to do with running red lights...I could be wrong, but I heard that running a red is going to have a fairly large number of demerit points associated with it.

I don't have a problem with this.

As long as they nail the IDIOTS WHO RUN REDS IN THEIR MOTOR VEHICLES. It's a hell of a lot more dangerous for whoever gets hit (by a car running a red than a bike running a red).

Oh, by the way...I have read an article stating that in the case of a car running a red being involved in an accident, the most likely outcome is that the car running the red gets T-boned by the car starting off from the green.

Sorry hufflett, whoever you are. I may have misread the point of your post because I've already worked about forty hours this week at least.

I just hope that all the wonderful people who seem to think that cyclists shouldn't be on the roads, and try to intimidate them for having the temerity to use "their" roads, always drive absolutely perfectly. You know, like the intelligentsia on the trademe forums. Do they? Yeah right...

It's frikkin Stupid, ride on the footpath, demerits, failure to indicate, demerits, failure to have reflectors (maybe demerits, and if you do have, an even bigger fine from the fashion police). And I lose the ability to drive a car. I can still ride my bike, and get even more demerits, I just can't drive a car. It's dratered. It's right up there with means testing for student allowances
