Yarp - I realized this too. We've got so used to comparing ourselves with the U.S. that it seems like we're in a better state than we actually are.
Best to start comparing the NZD against a more stable currency - like the Euro:
NZD vs Euro
NZD vs USD |
we get paid in US$ for our fruit that goes overseas, the the low US$ has hurt us more this year that everything else going up has, eg fuel, labour etc......
would be nice to be paid in euros

But how can you tell the the "storm" isn't perpetually just around the corner?

its aways around the corner sometimes you just don't know where the corner is.

Meh, I'm not sure I believe prices are going to "skyyrocket"
Really how much cost of the bike is made up of raw materials and cheap chinese/taiwanise labour?
Ive heard this story before an yet I don't feel bikes are significantly more expensive than when I started riding 5years ago (although my tastess have )
Anyway no matter how much they cost for the amount of smiles they give me they will always be a bargin.

Factor in the rising price of transport for ALL steps nick. Materials (and the cost increase that goes with having to pay more for fuel to extract resources) transport, construction / manufacture costs, trasnport, transport, the fact a huge % of NZ dollar (therefore exchange rate) is made up of fuel money, and it's fairly logical.
If not, what's going to account for these increased costs?

I'm not saying price won't go up I just believe "skyrocket" is possibly overstating the situation.
What constitues a "skyrocket" these days, 50%?

Most bikes are made of alloy whats the price of steel going up got to do with it?

As the price for oil goes up, the demand for cars will drop and production will switch to bicyles as the demand for them grows, factor in some technilogical improvements and viola, prices will in fact drop.
See, any economist can make stuff up about the future.

Yup, 25-30% is the range I think were looking at. Bikes have never been cheaper than they have right now I believe.

no I think the gap between them will close as US labour has not changed. I cant see US sourced product going up much apart from the cost of freight. Chinese sourced product will go up.
