farrrrk that was a cool movie, definitely one for the big screen
Saw it projected in what looked like 16:9, so probably would look exactly the same on a hi def format.
On the other hand, tension movies are SO much better with an audience, to get the pack reaction thing going. Ala the audiences with which I saw Blair Witch and The Descent.

Yay, yet more bad movies for kidults.
Hellboy has Del Toro promosing seven kinds of awesome.
Batman has the same team returning and promising balls of thunder.
Indiana Jones has Speilberg back to what he does best (B grade subjects done with A grade flair) and a script they held out on till it was good
Bond is the Bond they should have being doing back in Dalton's era.
Trek is only as good as the person in charge, and JJ Abrams (Lost/Alias) could really surprise with his interpretation.
Pixar will continue to bring the magic.
Persepolis is something I have been trying to see for ages.
Wanted is based on a really cool comic book, and so far the trailers have not given what is actually going on away.
Horton - Dr Suess and CGI and Jim Carey and Steve Carrell has so much potential.
2) 28Weeks Later
It is my biased list, so here is the bias for this entry:
It was largely set just down the road from where I lived
I got to see some of it being filmed
The director has only done one other movie, which I quite like
I went to the world première
AND I am quite the sucker for a bloody political zombie flick.
It didn't exactly light up the box office, but hopefully it did well enough to justify 28 Months Later. Zombie movies have certainly been hot property in lala-land recently, and must be still 'hot' with the money men as there are a stack of em due this year as well. So, bring em on.
Brief talking points. There is plenty of American Military Occupation subtext on display. It is a proper horror with things get occasionally nasty and graphic (emotional AND blood'n'guts horror). It is also pretty cool to see how a whole recognisable city can be convincingly digitally destroyed for relatively low budget (28 weeks/Cloverfield) and compare well with the $150 million+ club (I Am Legend). And yeah, seeing this in a screening with locals that really know the area, there were plenty of snickers as to the geographical decisions the characters make.
Special mentions if you do happen to like a bit of zombie in your entertainment. The Billy Connelly black comedy 'Fido' is super cool if you can chase down a copy. And I also tracked down a copy of the original Euro edit of 'Dawn of the Dead' with Argento/Goblin input. Kind of cool, but not spectacularly different from the more political Romero cut.

I am looking forward to all of those. Particularly Hellboy, I LOVED the first one.
As for Star Trek by Abrams with a new crew? The new crew approach is what the franchise needs, I dont think it even needs Denny Crane in it, and if it is 10% as good as the hard core fans think it should be, then it should be good enough. Of course the millstone is the "Star Trek canon"
Have you seen "30 Days of Night"? I havent read the comic it was based on, but there was a trailer before "I am Legend": Monsters look scary, premise looks good, bring it on.
Just to say I REALLY liked "I am Legend". Sure it cost a bunch of money, and sure its a remake of a remake etc, and its got similarities to 28 Days Later and evey other zombie film you've seen, but the result is just excellent. I dont really "do" horror that much because my brane is small and I believe whatever the people on the screen are telling me, so I am too involved in the movie to not believe, and consequently spend a lot of time in a horror with fingers in ears NOT looking at the screen. There is a bit of that in "I am Legend" but not too much, but its good. I also liked the ending.
Dazz' criteria in movie watching are mine too ("Did you go up to the spotty herbert behind the counter after the film and grab him by the throat and scream "Give me my money back, AND the two hours of my life, you kcufER"!!" .... if yes, bad movie, if no, good movie) and I am Legend is definitely one I was happy to pay to see on the big screen.
you didn't think I am legend finished... well, kinda suddenly? I mean, I really liked that movie also, but after the big finale there was that american over explanation thing again which kinda started the story off again...
and I would've liked more on the main bad dude and his social development... but then I guess it was [the will smith character]'s story and he didn't get it so neither did we.
Not really a fan of Marvel comic books, so no anticipation for Iron Man. If I hear good things once it starts previewing, then may well check it out. On the other hand, after all the years Stan 'the Man' spent trying to get Hollywood interested in doing Marvel Movies, the break through with Spiderman has Marvel bringing all their movie rights back in house, and now they are co-producing movies directly. Which brings in the interesting rumour that all the upcoming Marvel movies have little cross over moments, leading to a potential Avengers movie down the line. Not that I give a tihs about the Avengers ( Steed and Peel Avengers Marvel avengers ). Also supposedly an Antman movie is in development with the director of Hot Fuzz. Not that I give a tihs about Antman, but I do give a tihs about the director.
DC on the other hand, keeps pumping out the 'what the kcuf is canon' goodness. I am not a Superman fan, but I can appreciate they have one Superman continuity in comic books, another in the excellent animated TV series, yet another in the Smallvile TV series (still going strong), yet another in the recent Film resurrection, and yet another in the currently in limbo live action 'Justice League' movie. On top of that, there was a recent direct to DVD movie based on the 'Death of Superman' comic book stunt from several years back that made newspaper headlines. It is animated style, and very very good. The whole death of Superman publicity stunt was pretty parc, and ALMOST got made into a live action movie with names like Kevin 'clerks' Smith and Tim Burton involved (with Nicholas Cage as Superman... ). The animated version actually polishes the drut of a story into something pretty good. Also upcoming is another direct to dvd animated Justice League movie, based on well regarded comic book mini series, with Lucy Lawless voicing Wonder Woman, and all the usual suspect characters (Batman, Superman, Green Lantern etc etc).
I know quite a few people that have been to see Cloverfield. Everyone either loves it or hates it. If you only expected or wanted something conventional, it would be a tough film to swallow.
I Am Legend. Liked it. But, for the third time it has been made, and each time the author of the novel has been involved... and they STILL have not included the plot point that justifies the title 'I Am Legend'.
Will Smiths verison owes more to Hestons version than the novel. Vincent Price's version is probably closest to the novel.
*spoiler about the novel*
In novel, the hero is not any sort of doctor, knows not why the world has gone to hell, and spends his daylight hours seeking out and destroying the vampire like monsters. He does not realise till it is too late, that some of the monsters are still partly civilized, and are starting a new society, and they view HIM as a monstrous legend, that kills them in their daytime slumber.

Lubie, you are right, the end is kinda weird. It was apparently a reshoot and differs greatly from the original ending. Which also kinda brings into question how they intend to do a sequel that the rights have been optioned on.
American Gangster is . It is kinda sad that to get some material for top black actors to get their teeth into it has to be a crime movie from a white director. But anyhow, Crowe can ACT, Denzil can ACT, the script deviates a LONG way from the truth, but it is still all good, and the whole thing LOOKS like a good slimy 70's drug movie should. Sounds like the lawsuits from people that got their feelings hurt by fictionalized versions of themselves have already started. Oh well, that is America for you.
Last year I caught an excellent doco about the coke trade in Miami in the 80's, with a couple of key major players telling their side of the story. I THINK this is it, but cannot be sure: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocaine_Cowboys
Recommended, especially if you wanna know how to go about flying entire plane loads of marching powder into the US at will is accomplished.

ahh-ha! Oh well, now I will have to read the book, seems like that fits with feel they were trying to reach *sort of * with the movie. Cheers Daz

without reading any of you post except the 1st line (I want no spoilers at all) is it a good movie or is a hollywood special effects thin plot movie?
Saw Cloverfield on the weekend. Fricken awesome. At the end, no-one moved to get out of their seats for a couple of minutes. They all just looked at each other and went "Friiiiiiick".
I couldn't stop smiling for ages after. At last a "Something attacking New York" that wasn't full of American flag waving, drawn out explanations and parcpy 'dramatic' acting. Its bug, its loud and you feel like you are running down the streets with the other screaming people.
Watch it, don't wait for the DVD, a lot of the effect will be lost on small screen.

That explains why i didnt really get I Am Legend, it seemed like a really disjointed movie.
And whats with using computers to make the zombies? I don't think CG is advanced enough yet to do believable humans, or even infected humans for that matter.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! not having seen any of the previous attempts, OR read the book, I thought that the link to Will Smith being the legendary person who invented the serum cure-all was a bit lame.
I am Legend = The book awesome, the recent film - awful.
I have been wondering where the Star Trek - Reinvention is going - dont get me wrong, i'm all for bringing the vision of 25th century back to the current 21st scifi genre but what I mean is this, if its successful, what then? a TV series - a series of films a'la previous Trek?
..but how would that work with the timelines created by current Trek universe? would they go so far as to completley dismiss all previous Trek? thats a HUGE step to try and keep existing Trek fans while getting new ones on board... otherwise they are going to be very limited in fitting it just before the original TV series....
American Gangster - IMHO I thought Denzil seemed a little flat to me in that film...Crowe delivered a great performance.
28 Weeks Later - hugely dissapointing to see the plot contrived of amazing co-incedences and major plot holes.
'Sdratust' seemed to come and go, and i think very underrated - esp. as a family movie.
