According to Global Action Plan, IT departments worldwide have a similar impact on the environment as the entire aviation industry, accounting for about 2% of the world's carbon pollution. The average server is equivalent to a "15mpg SUV" in its carbon emissions, the report claims. Global data storage is growing faster than the airline industry - increasing by 48% to Airlines' 6% in the UK in 2006 - meaning it could overtake aviation in the near future. We figure this makes us - fast car loving, frequent flying computer junkies - possibly the worst polluters on the planet. [Via the New Scientist]

except in NZ where the carbon footprint for electricity is relatively low by global standards. Yay for hydro generation...
...we've (my work) been looking at the cost of being carbon neutral by 2010 globally. The cost in NZ is about 1/6th of that in Australia (in terms of carbon per watt), simply because NZ has so much hydro generation. At the same time we've got a big programme underway to massively consolidate the servers we have - making more efficient use of each CPU cycle and watt by virtualising multiple app servers onto a single box.
I was more concerned to hear that the flights of all the delegates and staff to Bali for the climate change summit (all 15,000 of them, I think that spells j.u.n.k.e.t) will produce the same amount of carbon emissions as a country the size of Chad does in a year.
Maybe a video conference, and some mojito's at home would be better?

The conference itself is being offset by the planting of 50,000 trees in Bali. And delegates are asked to dress casually, so the air conditioning can be left off (i.e. no ties, suits etc). What delegates do about thier own emissions caused by travel is up to them. I know some of our delegates are voluntarily carbon neutral in their travel, including the Minister.
I'd be more concerned by the actions of some parties in the discussions than the incidental emissions. Like Saudi Arabia trying to delete the agenda item on international aviation emissions for the nth time
