I’ve had a lot of fun specing out this bike, a ss cyclocross bike. Just what every stable of bikes need.

Frame/Fork
Cotic roadrat
Cotic make some lovely frames but this one appeals the most to me. Speedy, stealthy and bloody good looking in black. Just what I need for cruising the streets of Welly as well as getting dirty out on the trails.

Wheels
White Industries Eno rear disc hub/ White industries M16 front hub
DT Swiss DB spokes
Salsa Delgado cross rims
The WI hubs aren’t the lightest hubs in the world but they are the shiniest. The Salsa Delgado cyclocross rims are light, wide (for a cyclocross rim) and most importantly come in silver. Holding it all together is DT’s DB spokes (in silver of course) and brass nipples. A classy neo-retro wheelset, subtle in silver.

Tires
Conti twisters.

Brakes
Avid BB7& road calipers/Hope rotors/Campy record carbon brake leverset
The campy record brake levers have to be seen to be believed. A bit of over the top bling to contrast the utilitarianism of the bike.
The avid BB7 are the road version of the perennial mtb bike favorite but with cable pull to match road levers. I’ve gone for the hope rotors to save a bit a bit of weight and with a bit of luck get rid of the avid squeal.

Cranks
White industries ENO ss cranks/SKF square taper BB
The finest crankset known to man. Despite what marketing people have led you to believe square taper is still unbeatable. While I was severely tempted to use a spec a ti Phil Wood BB I couldn’t bring myself to spec a $400 BB so SKF it is.

Drivetrain
White industries ENO freewheel
Instant pickup with 6 pawls and 72 engagement points and completely rebuildable. Don’t sound too bad either. 38:18 would work nicely I think.
You could run it fixy for extra cool points, but I kind of like my teeth.

SRAM PC 58 chain
I don’t see the point of specing a bling chain on a ss. Within a couple of weeks it’s stretched anyway.

Controls
On-One Midge
I don’t want to be accused of being a roadie.

Thomson stem and layback seatpost
Really don’t need to explain these ones.

Salsa seatcollar
No QR for a cleaner look.

Sella Italia SLR saddle

Shimano PD-M540

FSA orbit headset.
99% of King quality for 20% the cost.

Sounds like a bita fun Tongue it

What's the cost?

Of all the bikes, I have owned I loved my Avanti Hardtail the most because to me it was really the do everything bike. With it I did my first DH race, did XC races and basically used it as my diving board into the awesome world of mountain biking. Sadly I outgrew my Avanti and found it way to small and not fitting to my increased freeride needs. So the type of bike I want to create would be one that I could step out of my front door on to Mt Victoria and have some fun doing the drops and getting over the rooty sections as well as gaining a lung searing workout on the way up. Take it to Makara and be able to ride the trails like ridgeline and vertigo with relative comfort and still have that awesome accelerating hardtail to go up Sally Alley and to be able to go to a dig day at Truby King and have a good dig and a play on it.

These are the Specs I’d go for it my Cotic in terms of 07 components:

Frame - Cotic BFe with white downtube $1200
Fork - RockShox Pike 454 Air $960
Headset - FSA The Pig DH Pro $98
Seat post - SDG I-Beam$136
Seat post clamp - Hope QR Clamp in silver $44
Saddle - SDG I-Sky $97.75
Stem - Truvativ Holzfeller $56.50
Bars - RaceFace Altas $85
Grips - ODI Ruffian Lock-on $55.25
Brakes - Avid Juicy 5 185mm Disc $354
Wheelset: Mavic Deetraks: $764
Tyres - Maxxis Minion DH 2.35 $62 x 2
Tubes - Maxxis dh $20 x 2
Cassette - SRAM PG-970 11-32 t $53.90
Chain - SRAM PC-991Hollow $68
Derailleur - SRAM X.9 medium cage $123.90
Front Derailleur: SRAM X.9 Low Clamp $61.90
Shifter - SRAM X.9 $89.95
Cranks - TruVativ Holzfeller 2.2. W Bashguard $260
Pedals – DMR V12 $122.50
Front chain rings – Race Face 32t 22t $98

Total: $ 4892.65

With this bike I was going for what I wanted without worrying about winning the competition or trying to please anyone else with creativity. I realistically put into perspective what I would want on the bike and why as if I was spending the money. I chose the BFe because like all Cotics its simplicity and slack riding angles made for an appealing ride for everything I’d want to do. The Air Pike quite simply put was a nice for that would be plush and saved some wait. They have versatility on their side with a lot of adjustments for all round trail, DH and dirt jumping. That and it would contrast lovely with the white frame. The headset is a cheap burly headset that I would think last for a long time and be relatively inexpensive to replace. The seat, seat post and clamp are all relatively inexpensive except the clamp which is just a good piece of bling. The SDG was a nice wide DJ seat that wouldn’t rip easily and would keep my buttocks pristine which I feel is important. With the kcocpit region I was looking to strike the perfect balance between price and the versatility to ride DH and trail. Achieving that with a solid Raceface bar, Raceface being a trustworthy company who would stand by their components. The Odi’s were a no brainier being the best choice for any bike. The Drive train system was a hard choice to make. The balance between wanting to add some bling to my bike but allowing it to remain cheap to fix if damaged was a hard call but in the end I went for bling but compromised by putting solid X.9 kit instead of X.0 but deciding to have a shorter cage for extra root clearance and a low front derailleur to eliminate needs of a shift guide. The cranks themselves are solid cheap kit very good option especially with a Bashguard included. I replaced the given rings with Raceface ones because the extra $98 would pay of in that it would last longer for the future.

In short the bike I built was an attempt to blend the freeride and XC bike into one all round beauty to do everything on. I also wanted it to be a realistic bike so that if people saw it they would be interested in building a Cotic like it and see that it doesn’t have to be hugely expensive to be a great ride as Cotics are. The balance was achieved between Price and quality and awesome looks making what I feel is a very solid lust worthy bike.

Thanks Cotic bikes and Vorb for the great comp, I thoroughly enjoyed creating this bike.

Sweet setup Double Thumbs Up

It's a bit of a bugger I can't enter as it looks like a fun exercise. Perhaps I'll just enter anyway happy in the knowledge I can't actually win Huh

James’ DREAM Cotic Soul.

This build was attempting to have the lowest weight possible while still retaining the strength demanded by a trail bike for a big guy like myself. It will be used to hit the local Traverse Track here in ChCh and I’m planning a big ‘ol roadtrip over summer but would really like a hardtail to take with me for a bit of variety and the Soul I think would be a perfect all round awesome ride. Id love to ride Queenstown, Wanaka, Nelson, Coronet Peak, Nelson and maybe a bit in the North Island if I manage to get up there. Also a bit of an XC race here and there is always fun to have go! This bike will be perfect for some epic rides over the summer.

Ok I guess a good place to start with would be the frame. My dream is the Cotic Soul, I love the idea of a big-ish travel Steel Hardtail and they look so hot with the green down tube decals! I sold my hardtail at the beginning of the year and have gone to a dual suspension but riding just isn’t the same without the option of the hardtail, Hardtail Pride!, they are great fun to ride because dual suspension let you away with mistakes too well Hardtail bikes keep you on your toes! Also having never had a Steel frame before I am very curious as to how well they do ride. The Soul frame really does it for me, love the simple but effective design. Very sweet looking bike!

My drivetrain will be all Shimano, Im such a fan of Shimano I could never go to anything else, nothing shifts as smoothly as Shimano and I have always had great reliability with them. So for cranks I’ve gone with the new M770 XT Cranks at 175mm, love that retro look to them! Next up is Rear Derailleur and I’ve gone with M970 XTR long cage Top Normal. Always used XTR at the back due to it being all in all…Awsome! Love the smooth and precise shifting. At the front I’ve gone with Shimano M760 XT. Once again have always used this and never had an issue with one and they have excellent shifting for the price, although an XTR front mech would be sweet, for the price of XT you just can’t beat it. Cassette I’ve also gone with M760 XT 11-34 tooth just to give me all the help I need in getting up hills! With a chain I’ve gone with Shimano CN-7701 which as you know is XTR/Durace level. Last but not least to make all these bits work I’ve gone with Shimano M970 XTR Rapid Fire Shifters. Have these on my current bike and absolutely love them, couldn’t ask for more. So finally in the drivetrain/shifting department I’ve gone with XTR once again, Shimano XTR Cable kit, transformed my shifting on previous bikes and will never use anything else again.

Ok for brakes I’m going to choose the new Shimano M775 XT Hydraulic brakes, really like the new design with the lever and feels great on other bikes I’ve tried it on. For rotors Im going with XT Centre Lock 203mm on the front and 160mm at the back, I’m a big-ish dude and need to stop somehow!

Wheels I’m going new again with the M776 XT Wheelset with the 20mm thru axle to take the bigger hits, obviously has the Centre Lock hubs to match up with the rotors.

Forks are next. I’m going to go with RockShox Pike 426 Coil with U-Turn. Great fork, reliable at a really good price and has that travel adjustment to make hills easier up and down. Has the 20mm thru axle. To keep that seated in the head tube will be an FSA Orbit MX headset.

Right then, the finishing kit. Bars will be RaceFace Evolve XC Riser with the 4 degree up ward rise will make my ride a bit better on the back not being so leaned over and also 31.8 diameter for a bit of extra strength. Stem will be a RaceFace Dues XC Stem 70mm/31.8mm. Once again a shorter stem to keep me sitting as up-right as I can be for

a bit of added comfort. Grips are going to be ODI Ruffian Lock Ons; nothing beats a lock
on grip for convenience if you ever need to remove them. Fizik Gobi is my seat of choice, haven’t used Fizik seat before but have heard nothing but good things about them so it won’t hurt (hopefully) to give it a try. Thomson will supply the seat post, a Thomson Seat Post, and to hold that in the frame will be a Hope Q/R clamp in green to match the green downtube decals on the frame. Maxxis High Roller Exception Series 2.1 tyres will keep me stuck to the trails unless of course a jump happens to appear out of the forest! Last up is pedals, going with M970 XTR Pedals.

There is no such thing as wrong. Just levels of right. Ask Jim and his fixed 700c wheeled Simple cross thingy!

I've heard the Alfine 8spd disc hub is pretty good. SRAM make something similar too, but only for European and North American markets. Full on dynamo front disc hub I reckon would do the business.

Hmm that was what I was thinking. For towing the kiddie trailer and around town.

Now do I want SS/fixie or gears Huh Hey if we can come in under budget can we have a second set up or would that make things to hard for you HM?

Frame: small BFe $1200
Fork - Rockshox Argyle 302 $480

Seat post clamp - Hope Bolt Clamp $27.50
Saddle - SDG I-Sky. $97.75

Spokes - MARWI Stainless Steel Spokes $12.95
Tyres - Maxxis Holy Roller $49.25 x2
Tubes - Innova MTB Tube $5.95 x2
Cassette - chainring - Varies - $50 est
Chain - Wipperman 8 speed $29
Crankset - Gravity Gap $410
Pedals - AtomLab G.I. $66.59

I am not the most hardcore rider and only chose what is needed. It would be used for street and dj so all the stuff I chose will be at home for that. I think he parts do not need to be too expensive on a hardtail and thats why I chose this standard stuff. They will all be simple and will last a long time. It took me 2 hours to look for the right prices and parts that would be under budget, all-tho the budget is $3292.69, I got under budget by a fair way. I chose the BFe frame as i think it would be the best for street and dj, and the argyles as they will suit the jumping nicely and are relativly cheap and good dj/street forks. I chose the race face headset because the headset is one of the organs of the bike as it holds your stearing and forks into the frame, and if it were a cheap headset, it could ruin all that. I chose the seat as it is aslo relativly cheap and soft, which will save me if I stuff up and I could still have kids when I get older. The stem and bars I can trust because all the bikes I have owned or a friend has owned, they were/are on it and they have not broken, and are cheap. One good brake is enough for street, all it needs to do is to help you stop and help with your wheelies, when jumping you in the air %80 and do not need brakes. I have read good feedback on the rhyno lite rims that if the buckle, witch is unlikely, they are easy to fix. The bike is single speed because it will save weight and gears are not needed in this type of riding.

THE END

So i'm going with something slightly different, I had a bit of a think about this one and what I am wanting is a Cyclocross type bike built with a Roadrat frame

I would use this for road riding, training, commuting and because i'm a mountainbiker at heart I wanna take this offroad.
So this bike needs to be strong as well as light, with the mix of road and mtb components I have achieved this.

Talking about wheels, I thought I could go all fancy and get a set of Industry nine, but in all reality I believe these would be overkill for my application and possibly be too heavy. I am a fan of Hope, I am also a fan of having something not everyone has, so I am super keen to try out the Hope Pro 3 hubs and lace these up with some good DT Swiss Double butted spokes I cant go wrong. Laced to some Salsa Delgado Cross rims, Salsa make a quality product and I want it, these are 700c wheels, perfect for my application.

Talking about brakes, this is a Cyclocross bike, I dont need disc brakes. I ahve always been a big fan of the Avid SD V-Brakes and the Copper Ti version looks hawt hawt! Running V-Brakes also give me the opportunity to use the non-disc Hope Pro 3 Hubs.

Talking about drive, Dura Ace is the best Shimano offer and I have been impressed with their offerings in the past, 9 Speed for me so that it is compatible with the MTB Hope Pro 3 rear hub. I dont need a Granny gear for this bike 2 chainrings will suit me a treat and with the Middleburn RS8 XC Duo cranks to drive these rings, God i'm in Heaven! Loving the CrankBros pedal, I have a bit of a sweet tooth so Candy is my flavour.

Talking about controls, Ritchy make a quality lightweight product, I have dreamed about speccing a bike with Ritchy components. Roadie Drop bars I want, MTB Stem and Seatpost - all WCS, but none carbon (I am a bit turned off carbon after loosing a very expensive set of handlebars). I had a Selle Italia SLR saddle once, I wish I had never gotten rid of it Sad I want another!!

Talking about other bits and pieces, A bike in my opinion has to not only perform well but look great. I want my bike to not only look great but stand out of the crowd by being some what different, I want something not everyone has. You will see a comon theme over the bike, with this theme there are highlights of ano green and yellow/gold. When I think Cotic these are the colours I see, I think this theme will work well with the roadrat.

I would choose the Cotic BFe frame in medium. I would use it mainly for hitting up the local BMX track and skate park during the week. In the weekend i turn into a no-thrills speedy singletrack rider at Whitford. Then off to Woodhill to hit up my fav XXXXX structure Crazy Train. I think a beautiful frame such as a Cotic BFe needs to be thrashed and used to its full potentional to unlock all the great qualities that a quality frame such as that brings out in a rider.

So my build would be as follows (mainly for Freeride, but built tough for skatepark and track action. But not so heavy that i cant ride 35km)

(All prices found on burkescycles.co.nz)

Frame Cotic BFe in Medium $1200 In white, its going to be pmipING
Fork Fox 36 Float R '07 $1689 Built to last, huckable
Headset FSA The Pig $70 Gone for quality, no ugly noises
Stem Truvativ Hussefelt $38.50 Simple, yet effective. I like the look.
Bars Truvativ Hussefelt $37.50 Match up the stem
Brakes Avid Code 5 203mm Disc x2 $480 Good braking power, not as expensive as real codes. But all i need
Grips ODI Ruffian Lock-on $55.25 Great feel, ni slips
Shifter SRAM X.7 Trigger $46.50 SRAM! You can see the gear
Derailleur SRAM X.7 $81.90 If it breaks, cheap to replace
Cassette SRAM PG-970 $53.90 Got one of these. No complaints Shiny!
Chain SRAM PC-971 $39.90 Pretty much the same as 991, just cheaper
Chainguide e-13 Single Ring Security $253 E-13. What can i say.
Crankset & BB Shimano Hone Double $289 External BB. Tough as nails. Had to comprimise down from Saints
Seatpost Truvativ XR $39.90 I tend not to use my seat much, why spend heaps on it?
Seat SDG Bel-Air Cromo $84.25 SDG. Comfy
Wheelset Mavic Deetraks $764 Not enough $$$ for Deemax. Not as pmiping, but strong enough!
Shift cable Shimano XTR Shift Cable Set $42 XTR quality
Brake adaptors Shimano $38.95
Tyres Tioga Factory DH F x2 $67 Good traction, doesnt wear out fast on concrete
Tubes Kenda x2 $20
Pedals DMR V8 $61.95 V8s, not as smooth as v12s, but with the grease port, they're fine.
Seatpost clamp QR clamp (included with frame)

Total: $5452.50

Which leaves $47.50 for shipping, and for small hidden things such as star nuts and headset spacers.

That bike, fully built up would be able to take everything that i can dish out to it, and still be wanting more. I have gone for quality top-end components that took me just over an hour to choose. They will last the distance on a hardtail.

Just added it up, total building including everything comes up to 14.3kg, a full on freeride bike thats sub 33lbs!

Cheers guys, you make really great frames. I actually enjoyed making this list.

Ok this IS my final copy

(All prices for Burkes Cycles or the devil store)

Frame - Cotic BFe with white downtube (medium) $1200
Fork - RockShox Pike 454 Air $960
Headset - FSA The Pig DH Pro $98
Seat post - SDG I-Beam$136
Seat post clamp - Hope QR Clamp in silver $44
Saddle - SDG I-Sky $97.75
Stem - Truvativ Holzfeller $56.50
Bars - RaceFace Altas $85
Grips - ODI Ruffian Lock-on $55.25
Brakes - Avid Juicy 5 185mm Disc $354
Rims: DT Swiss EX5.1 D $125 x 2
Hubs: Atomlab GI hubs: $283
Tyres - Maxxis Minion DH 2.35 $62 x 2
Tubes - Maxxis DH $20 and a Maxxis Welter Weight tube $16
Cassette - SRAM PG-970 11-32 t $53.90
Chain - SRAM PC-991Hollow $68
Derailleur - SRAM X.9 medium cage $123.90
Front Derailleur: SRAM X.9 Low Clamp $61.90
Shifter - SRAM X.9 $89.95
Cranks - TruVativ Holzfeller 2.2. W Bashguard $260
Pedals – DMR V12 $122.50
Front chain rings – Race Face 32t 22t $98
BB: Truvativ Team SL GigaPipe. $60

Total: $ 4263.65

This leaves:$1236.35 for the building of the wheels with DT spokes and any other building costs.

They have versatility on their side with a lot of adjustments for all round trail, DH and dirt jumping capability. Achieving that with a solid Raceface bar Raceface being a trustworthy company who would stand by their components. I also chose the Atlas bars because they are lighter and more trail/xc orientated than the Holzfeller bars that would match the stem. The Odi’s were a no brainier being the best choice for any bike. The stem was a harder decision to make as it makes a heck of a lot of difference to what would happen and how the bike would feel. I stuck to the shorter stem because being realistic I’m going to be doing more down that up so a longer stem isn’t as necessary just yet. I used to have these on my Manic and found they were excellent cranks which I had no trouble with coupled with the extra light truvativ gigapipe bb to make cheap but effective kit. I replaced the given rings with Raceface ones because the extra $98 would pay of in that it would last longer for the future. The DMR pedals are also a matter of proven quality pedals, I’m not as confident with clips so I stuck to DMR with this bike and all DMR pedals tend to be strong and wide and these especially have a good flat profile unlike pedals like crank bros 50/50 which have a bulge in the middle ruining the pedal. The cassette and Chain I went from SRAM because of the quality but again was also looking for cheap because at the end of the day they are high wearing parts and unless you’re looking to race competitively these would fit the bill and even save the bike weight.

The tires, tubes and wheels were also a questioning point because would I go all out freeride with some solid tubes or would I go light weight. I went for solid tires because I would be riding rough terrain but I went for the 2.35 to still enable up hill riding but I got two different tubes. A DH tube for the rear to prevent flats and a light tube at the front to save some weight. The wheel was a hard choice because I could have gone for all out DH freeride or a trail xc or another type as there is soo many. I went for the GI hubs simply because they are very solid strong kit and I was willing to sacrifice weight on that matter. The DT Swiss EX5.1 D are the bringing gap model between the freeride model and the XC model. Having been a sun rim rider on my previous bike I wouldn’t know how these would perform but hearing only good things about DT and also this choice would make it lighter than the other option of the Mavic counter part. I chose to build up the Wheelset from separate parts as it would end up being cheaper and more unique than my first option which was Mavic crosstrack wheels.

In short the bike I built was an attempt to blend the freeride and trail bike into one all round beauty to do everything on.
