They are just trying to spin it so that they can justify putting prices up. 5c a litre increase. Big deal. Price of petrol will increase anyway.
Sure, it aint going to be a walk in the park, but Shell will still be making money off it! What are they complaining about!! Once it actually starts to be used, improvements will start happening to the systems and ways of using it. You have to start somewhere and if NZ does not start now we will be 30 years behind instead of just 20... and then if oil does suddenly decline...

China is going to be a big player in the next couple of decades. At the moment they only have 2% car ownership or something like that. The government wants to bring that up to 16% by 2020. Owning a car in china is a sign of affluence. So the government are buying 10 year old manufacturing plants from the states. Not only does this mean more chinese get to own cars, but the cars they own are inefficient on two fronts. one, they're old, and two, they're American.
Also, when there are breakthroughs in efficiency technology, the American car manufacturers just make bigger engines using just as mush fuel. The oil companies want this.
If anyone wants a good book to read on the topic, I strongly recommend THE END OF OIL by Paul Roberts. Makes you think twice about hoppin in the car to get a litre of milk.

Interesting forum, i think that it's going to take an oil crisis before anything is done to solve the problem, as with most things in this country it always takes something bad to happen before anything is done.
Also people's mindsets are caught up in the "if it doesn't affect me why do anything about it"

That would be one heck of a lot of manual labour to make beer without oil...
grow the barley, harvest the barley, malt the barley, grow the hops, harvest the hops, brew the beer, bottle the beer...
no, you dont "need' oil to make beer, but it makes it one hell of a lot easier!!

No I was just explaining that it was much easier to get a beer these days...and that if we suddenly had no oil beer would be a lot harder to come by.
