I was on my own and not sure I could hold my speed down with the camber of the wood and muddy tyres. You can't see how much of a step there is at the bottom, but having seen the photo, I knew it was there.
There is also a couple of stepdowns that are the full width of the track, one of them freshly dug and taller than the others.
I'm confused. I thought this track was meant to be a by-pass for those not confident to tackle Spoonhill. If 491 isn't an easier way down than Spoonhill, less confident riders will ride up Jungles and Labyrinth, and then turn and ride back down them. With summer around the corner and more people get out riding, won't that cause conflict. |
This will be interesting since everyone (including Rec Men/Women) are heading down there in the PNP race! |
491 ia a fair bit easier than spoon hills old top section, particularly in the wet.
Ride 491 on a grippy dry day in particular and you will be grinning like a goodun!

I am up on 491 trail tommorow shaping some features and adding some found rock armouring to weather proof the trail against the horrors of slipperyness after rain.
I may walk up from bottom with tools and buckets for rock so if you dont see the van dont panic - i will be there unless it's absolutly hosing down.
come join me if your keen.

Bah! You know what I mean!
It's Friday night - I shouldn't have to worry about correct grammar and sentence structures!

Huge huge thank yous to everyone who helped make Sunday’s scouting event / family open day so successful. Weather couldn’t have been better, fabulous number of locals stopped by for a look, and the kids had a ball !!
Great feedback on the finished half of the Easy track, 100 metres of new flowy single track constructed in 4 hours, lots of tyres pulled out and plants planted. 230 sausages were devoured – the biggest volunteer day yet at WTP.
Real relaxed feel good days like this don’t happen by themselves – big thanks to everyone who contributed especially Neil, Martin and Tryfan for surveying Scout (the new track) before the event, Michaela for delivering 500 letterbox fliers in the pouring rain (teeshirt earnt!), WTP trail maestros for supervising the digging, and the midget gravel bucket train, committee members for being on the spot for “crowd control” (you know who you are), the entire Jones family for setting up the sausage sizzle meet and greet, and the lovely Dangerous Dave for loan of equipment, opening up and closing up.
It was a day for the kids to lend a hand & super busy but I remember what the first and last said.
FIRST
9.10am: Arrive five minutes early at the locked gate at the end of Waiu St. Slip of a kid pedalling with a purpose up the wide deserted street.
“You’re a bit early – starts at 10”
-That’s all right. I’m biking in Lower Hutt today
“oh”
- (pause) I want to tell you it’s wonderful what you’re doing – this, I think it’s great!
“oh!...you at the high school? In the MTB club?”
- No, you need a $6000 bike to be in that. But I’ve been up there. I went down Spoonhill on my $400 bike and I didn’t like it.
“ Yeah. I didn’t like it on my fully rigid either…”
- I biked to Upper Hutt once and I’m meeting my friends now… better let you get on…. [pedals away]
LAST
3.50pm: last scouting family return to car – mum, grandad, and 9 and a half year old cub grinning from ear to ear.
“How was that?”
- My grandson lives on the flat and had never cycled up a hill before. We got a third of the way along the Easy track & had to turn back. But then there was downhill and the penny dropped what it was all about so we did it again, even further the second time!
- (cub) Yeah I didn’t know that I could go downhill without the brakes on!!!!
