Hi, for all of you who didn't already know there is a new track in Long Gully currently being developed working its way down to the unfinished Jump Park. The aim of the trail is to encourage riders who are progressing with their Downhill but not confident to ride some of the other existing LG trails.

The skill level required to ride this track will be above the medium/hard grade tracks in Makra Peak. There will be quite a few jumps with opitions to go big or small or even roll though. This track will try to encourage peoples confidance to jump by providing a variety easier jumps not seen in Long gully.

We are hoping to give the track a single track feel similar to Car Parts, maintaining a constant flow. This will hopefully end up being around a 3-3.5 minute track.

The track will have plenty of filled in jumps and a few smaller gaps further down for people to get the hang of.Iif you still aren’t that keen on jumps you could practise in the jump park while your waiting for transport. Learner jumps will built in the jump park over the next year.

If this is the sort of track you would like to ride we would like you come and give us a hand. No Expierance necessary all training given on the job.
We would ask people to bring their own tools if possible. We have a good collection but not enough for everyone. The most useful tools to bring are handsaws and Grubbers.

In the past the club has offered shuttling to diggers for helping out. This however has resulted in too many riders and not enough transport or too many vehicles on the road and ended up being a nightmare to orginise. If you do come along to help us dig please do not expect shuttles.

Ultimately the club would like to encourage more people to come and be a part of the atmosphere and help develop stronger member relationships.

Further Design notes.

During the developement of this track ive come up with different ideas that im going to try to incorperate which i will list as a record of its developement. These ideas will be implemented after the grassy bowl .

Sustainability
To reduse the amount of wear and tear methods to remove sudden deceleration skidding will be incoureged.
#speed can be removed by aiming the track up the hill a small amount but enough to allow all people to coast through.
#Berms will be formed to prevent offcamber ware and maintain speed.
#Benching will be provided as much as possible to prevent piled soil erodeing down banks , but also will lesson the amount of digging required.

Skills course.
The idea of a skills course has been floating around for a while but never really taken off for various reasons. By Incorperating a wide range of obsticles that can be ridden by a large percentage of members , we are effectively builing a skills track.

Not just Shuttling.
From my expieriance the best riding skills are gained from sifting (sessioning sections, jumps). Some parts of this track have already proved worthy of this and the development of more areas like this further down have been marked with return tracks.

Flow design
Im liking the idea of designing it in such a way that you could coast as much of the track as possible without the need for pedaling. Efforts will be made to provide ramps and rollers to pump off to gain extra speed.Riding without pedalling teaches you to really focus on technique that will gain more speed buy picking betters lines and using the terrain better.

Multipule lines.
Im also spending allot of time marking Race lines and Sport lines at the same time.
In the past the sport lines have been an after thought that has been put in out of nessesity and generally make the run for the punters very stop start.
Ive also started making multiple lines for corners for people to think and work out for themselves why different lines work.

Race worthy track
Throughout the development of this track im constantly thinking that it also needs to meet the requirements of racrers. This will be a good track for racers because gravity will only give you some of the speed your used to getting on the race track. You want more speed then you wil have to earn it by pedalling!!!
This will really sort the couchers from the pedallers.

Some stuff i want:
Ive spent allot of time in skate parks on Dh bikes and this is where ive got a large amount of my expieriance to develop a flowing rythmic track. The skills i use in these parks are inspiring me to find locations to build similar lips and kickers where i can use these skills.
Lots more smaller jumps and kicks opposed to the Race track wich is more about massive jumps but a few of them.

Safety
ive been thinking that in the event of an accident and somebody needs to be carried out it woud be good to have some of the easier lines compatable with stretcher recovery.
links to the 4wd track should be allowed for too.

Early on it was thought this would be a good place to implement some of the council track building regulations just to get the hang of builing a track with strong limitations.
Still thinking like this but never got round to finding an accurate summary of these limitations.

XC types can ride from the airstrip to Wright's hill pretty easily...or even cycle back up the road :-)

Do people on workparties pay the $5 ?

About 20-25 metres of new track was cut last sunday.
We made it up to the goat road and through the fence and even managed to put in a few moguals . Test runs proved that you could get down through the valley and up the other side easily ,only to run out of steam once there.

The next section has been marked as a flat line round the side of the hill (20 metres). This will help people catch there breath before the next onslaught.

This section of track was dug by: Mike, Bugle ,Richard,Hamish , Steve, keiran, (sorry if ive missed someone) .

Me and Keiran went back up to Steves corner and did a couple of hours work trying to rectify the stalling issues coming out of it. Its Still not quite finished so dont hit it too hard.

The berm will be quite soft, but this tihsty weather should help pack it down some. Still, pleased with it, looks like a masterpiece Big Grin

Need to find that mathematical equation for the golden ratio Wink

I Thought people might like to see how jawbone meets the Jump park.

I just marked it out in the weekend so i can now work out how to safely merge the jawbone track into the jump park.

The left line will be the hard line with tech tight single stuff through the gorse into a vert chute that will need to have a big enough ramp to clear the river.

The right line will be the safer option .

So far ive marked (mainly in my head) about 2 small doubles, 3 turning jumps, 1 big possible stepdown/double , and thats only in the top and bottom areas.

and 3 step downs. i think every coner will be bermed so im not going to bother counting.

if anyone has a picture of something they would like to try to incorperate , id be happy to have a look and see where the best place to do it would be. (if possible)
Remember this is a beginner/medium level DH track so dont get any big ideas.

I measured it the other day - just over 30.5 inches.

im thinking a similar size to the end of the race track , but it also has to be like a step up to meet the bank on the other side.

im working on a post that will update the jump park and give a clearer picture of what im talking about.

We had an awsome response at this weeks dig day with the largest turn out in long ages .

Special thanks to all those who turned up and did a great job of getting the track another 25m more ridable. Although nev and johono cleared another 50m with the chain saw too.

Having ridden it a few times i think its safe to say that some more of the little uphill has to go.(begining of saturdays efforts) it will mean alot more hacking of rock though.

Good stuff.
