Free Chainsaw Course - Rotorua

Postby Jeff on Fri 8/May/09 5:27am

The Rotorua Mountain Bike Club has teamed up with the Forestry School at the Waiariki Institute of Technology to offer a free chainsaw course (normally $62pp) to RMTBC members membership forms are here The course will cover all the basics of using and maintaining a chainsaw safely, including NZQA unit standards:
• Level 3 6917 Operate a chainsaw
• Level 2 6916 Demonstrate knowledge of the Code of Practice relating to chainsaw use.
Full details of the course are available here:

Course dates:
The theory is covered over 2 evenings, Wed 13th and Thurs 14th May 6pm - 8.30pm, the practical is covered on the a Saturday morning 16th May, 8am - 1pm. Attendees are not required to bring a chainsaw, but if they have one, they can bring it along.

Attendance of a course such as this one is a prerequisite of being able to use the club chainsaw, or any chainsaw in Whakarewarewa Forest or the Department of Conservation Estate. It’s also a great idea to get some training in this, even if you’re just using a chainsaw to cut firewood at home, as chainsaws are capable of inflicting some of the most horrific wounds if operated incorrectly.

If you would like to attend the course, please download and fill in the enrolment form If you are not currently a RMTBC club member, you’re welcome to join to attend this course. The first course is limited to 15 people, if we have further interest a second course will be scheduled.

Hi Jeff
This is another course I was keen to add to the summit in August. I have not tried anyone local yet but if your contact is a MTBer he may want to come down and run another course then.
