Frame Painting In Welly

Postby cmdr_keen on Tue 7/Sep/10 12:16am

Hey yall, just wondering if anyone can recommend a good enamel spraypainter in Wellington.
Already got the frame blasted and primed hence the painting otherwise id just get it powdercoated.

Otherwise any advice on home spray painting much appreciated, Ive heard that warming up the paint helps...

I'll ask that courier guy Ed next time I see him. Have you seen his brothers frame hanging out the back at work? Metallic red with the cream forks? It looks real good.

Could give this fellow whirl: http://sharrattcustomdesigns.blogspot.com/

I have seen some nice stuff from him and everyone seems to be happy.

Enamel is too soft for bike frames. You’ll want a two pot system – either a solid colour or base coat with a two pot clear coat over it.
You could spray it at home but you’d need some decent gear (compressor, water and oil traps, a decent gun and mask etc) and you’d have to warm the shed up or wait until you get temperature like 13-4 degree C. Anything less and the paint can bloom.
So, probably best to get a spraypainter to do it. Ask at a carpainters if they'll do it and ask if you can see some colours they have in stock so you don't have to buy paint unnecessarily.
They'll be able to give you a little bit for touch ups when they're done too.

The guys at www.edwardspanel.co.nz have done a few paint jobs on bikes, and they're good.
