their service changed a while ago from being really snotty and useless to being actually quite good and responsive most of the time. and the food is really good.

service in general in cafes is vaguely bad or patchy, which is what you get with any poorly paid pool of predominantly temporary workers.

the atmosphere in midnight is what i go there for, as with most cafes that's the deciding factor (eg lido sucks plastic fake scrotum)

Fair play - the last time i was in there when the girl making the coffee was pretty much straight out rude was couple of months ago. Perhaps i will give it another try.

hmm... yeah i guess they have their good and their bad staff. it would be interesting though to see how long someone lasts in th ecafe if they are rude: it would be a good indication of the general tone of the place if management put up with it for long.

Also, there is nothing wrong with hauling someone up on that as a customer, though often such rude people have a sort of passive aggressive way of doing it that you only realise afterwards they are being deliberately snotty.

you can also complain to The Boss ;) and see what happens.

the guys that regularly serve in there (theres a red haired guy, and a young dude who's ok but a bit show-offy) are really good.

Yeah - I've found that the service at midnight has been somewhat better over the past 18 months or so than it ever used to be. And their food is still nice. I kinda prefer fidels for food, but the ambience at Midnight is generally nicer. Fidels can feel like a supermarket on $1 bread and milk special days sometimes - especially if you're sitting out front where the queue jams up the room.

Consistently best cafe food I've had in welly was at nikau (which is closed while the gallery upgrade happens).

In my defence everything in Palmerston North is about 7 to 15 years behind the times....... So things like latte bowls and mullets are still the height of style here. Next month the fad is going to be chatter rings :)

I liked Espressoholic, they got Welli addicted to the family sized latte, never a cafe I was regular however they ran for 20 years, so you must have been doing something right.

Buy hey step away from the steamer... next thing you will be going into is recommending or shunning a cafe in Wellington on the condition of the toilets.
