Here's my belated earthquake memoir: felt small earthquake, got up and stood under door frame, AHHHHHHHHH THE WORLD IS ENDING OH GOD I REPENT I REPENT!!!!!!!, shaking subsides, search desperately for pants in the pitch black, more searching for pants, find pants, put pants on, wander outside to listen to all the sirens going off, my house alarm starts going off, try to turn house alarm off but can't... get pissed off with house alarm, find candles and lighter, light candles, yell at house alarm, AFTERSHOCK OH MY GOD WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!!!!! aftershock subsides, alarm still going and still can't work out how to stop it, yell at house alarm some more, locate screwdriver and pliers in garage (step in broken glass on the way through the kitchen), destroy house alarm utterly, look for battery radio in cupboard, find battery radio in cupboard, find that battery radio in cupboard has flat batteries, pick glass out of feet by candle light, take a whizz, crawl back into bed and cower through the next hour of aftershocks, drift off to sleep and wake up at nine.

Picture of the destroyed alarm, and also of a holographic Jesus I plan to hang in my toilet to ward against future natural disasters:

No, you just have to move it from side to side. When I got it I was hoping it was a sexy holographic Jesus where in one of his poses you get to see his cock.

So you can make Jesus writhe around on the cross?

Or does moving it make a Roman rock on up and stab him in the guts with a spear?

As a fellow Sth Brightoner I won't claim to have perfect recall of my decision making at 04.36am but for some reason it just felt like a landbased earthquake - certainly my money was on it being on the main Alpine Fault quake (which we are overdue for ) - so I never seriously thought a tsunami was likely. In our part of Pine Ave we had lots leave in the minutes after, especially those with young kiddies, and I can imagine if I'd still been a parent of the young and very vulnerable this whole event would have been even more adrenalin inducing. Mfw + others - I can't imagine how much fear you and others carried in those moments. Kia Kaha, hope the kids are not too traumatised (or you)

That was a big one. 3.7, but only 10km south-west.
