Look up belgian cyclocross on youtube an you might start to get the idea. Basically it involves road biking off road on modified road bikes in the middle of winter on short criterium like courses which often require the rider to dismount to pass obstacles. Also in belgium it involves thousands of screaming fans and lots of beer

The Pukete track where its being held I would class as a beginner mountain bike track. It's fairly flat, nothing overly technical, a few grassy sections, and I'd imaginge they will import a few obstacles that will be technical / require dismounting for the event.

There's plenty of scope for hilly bits out in the park, enough to get the hurt on that's for sure. Especially if the weather is crap. I'm looking forward to hearing more about this event.

Question: does a roadrat with disk brakes, single speed and [bold] flatbars [bold] count as a Cross bike or just a rigid 29" ?

Technically not a cross bike as accordin to the UCI disk brakes aren't allowed and they normally have drop bars as opposed to flat but that bike would be sweet for this competition I believe

I woul fit a small if it was the drop bar model as I wish to run drops but I'm a student.... hence no money so new is not really an option :(

Right, First update. Things are progressing nicely, support is coming from all over. I hope to announce a couple of sponsors in the next few days, as well as a few key elements to the event ;)

Big Update: Date change to 30th August.
You can't have a cross race in spring! so date changed to end of winter.

Second update: August 10th: Training ride at Pukete MTB Park Hamilton
We decided it would be cool to have a day where anyone can show up and try this whole cross thing out before the actual race. Will set up some barriers, but generally it'll just be a show up and ride format for anyone in the area.

Im running discs.
*Disclaimer: This is not a UCI sanctioned event

Im assuming its fairly low-key, and the organisers arent going to be overly strict on what does or doesnt qualify, they want the numbers.

Bingo! Yep will just see how things go in terms of what sort of interest there is in a CX bike category and MTB category. More than likely will just run all as one and try design a course that favors cross bikes. UCI rules were a little restrictive for the type of event I had in mind, hence no National Champs status. I'm just looking at getting some interest in cross going in NZ, and next year we can look at the full national champs thing.
I must ad though BikeNZ were very helpful in regards to what I would have to do to make this a true National Champs, even offering to find me a commissaire.
