I just want to ride my bicycle but:
- apparently I should ride on quiet roads with no cars
- but not ones with no shoulder
- and not ride roads with corners on them
- and be highly visible
- but not use blinking red lights cos they make it hard to assess how far away I am
- not ride two abreast because it makes it hard to overtake
- not ride single file cos it makes the bunch longer and more difficult to overtake.
- pay road taxes for the roads i ride on (oh, wait, I do that already).
- pay council taxes for the trails i ride on (oh, wait, I do that already)

I could go on but meh.

It's a shame their cars aren't as narrow as their minds, then we would all have plenty of room on the roads.

We can't win the tards hearts and minds, because they're heartless ( the fact that the death of a cyclist who was doing everything right provoked a "cyclists need to be responsible for their own safety" response shows this) and the vocal minority of motorists are mindless, so lets just start some proper lobbying for tougher sentencing. Driver education and engagement isn't working, a bigger stick is needed.

Agree. The only way to motivate a change in their behaviour is to threaten their driving licence, bank account and criminal record. After that is done, then try education again.

interesting that it appears the maximum penalty or causing injury and death are the same

appeared in Hamilton District Court this morning to face a charge of aggravated careless use of a motor vehicle by illegally overtaking causing death and two charges of careless driving causing injury.

Through his lawyer Thomas Sutcliffe, Dryland indicated he was likely to plead guilty to all charges.

The maximum penalty for each charge is three years' imprisonment or a $10,000 fine.

I can't imagine him getting 9 years in prison though . . . . . .

Nice for the families though that he's not contesting the charges - it would appear he has a soul

How about asking the families what is reasonable, after all, they are the ones that have been impacted.

For killing three cyclist recently:
Miss King was sentenced to 300 hours' community work, ordered to pay $30,000 to the victims' families or to charity and disqualified from driving for 12 months.
