I assume by "Cycleway" they mean like the one between Petone and Ngauranga... would have to be sealed, and presumable seperated from the highway somehow.

The math doesn't work. $50m / 2 years / 3700 jobs = $6,756.75 gross per annum per job without allowing for any design / materials, etc.

$50m is probably just shoulder widening and a bit of paint. Not sure where the new jobs come from though. And how it will attract tourists. Mmmm - SH1 between Christchurch and Ashburton anyone?

You're assuming they'll employ 3700 people for a period of 2 years.... I imagine many contracts would be only several months in duration.

I'm for it. Love to know more about it but the fact they even thought about it is a good thing.

A really nice cycleway the length of the country would be awesome.... But to make a GOOD one would require a shitload more I reckon - gotta get some right-of-way through scenic places, go up and down some nice hills etc. $50m won't do. $1 billion perhaps....
