Craters Of The Moon To Become Paid Access Area (taupo)

Postby pushbikerider on Mon 16/Dec/13 8:08pm

Got an E-mail tonight from Bike Taupo, the group that has negotiated access to the MTB area known as Craters of the Moon.

Bike Taupo wrote:As one of our valued members I am writing to you to inform you of some important changes at Bike Taupō. As of January 1, 2014 all people wishing to become, or remain, a member of Bike Taupō will need to pay a membership fee. This is a significant change for Bike Taupō as, for the last ten years, Bike Taupō has been free to join. Bike Taupō is a community organisation that survives on grants and donations.

The job of building and maintaining our 250 km track network is significant. The subscriptions program will give Bike Taupō a more dependable income stream to ensure that tracks can continue to be built and maintained. The membership fee will be used to fund the maintenance, and potential expansion of, the Craters Mountain Bike Park, Wairakei Forest and the wider trail system, including the Great Lake Trail and the upper Waikato River Trails. In addition the fee will assist in the funding of Bike Taupō’s very successful Kids Bike Taupō program.

The biggest change however, will be that all users of Craters Mountain Bike Park will need to be members and therfore pay a fee to enter. Currently everyone who uses the park should be Bike Taupō members as this is a condition of the permit that Bike Taupō holds to build and operate the trails. All members will be covered by Bike Taupō’s public liability insurance, which is a must when using a managed forest such Craters.

This is a move that Bike Taupō have not taken lightly or rushed into. It is a major change for both locals and visitors alike. Craters has had free to access for 10 years, but the charges will now mean more certainty for trail maintenance and development, as well as ensuring that the park is operated as per its permit.

Probably worth emphasising this is ONLY 'Craters of the Moon' not the Great Lake trail (W2k etc) nor the Rotary Ride (Spa Park-huka Falls)+ other Waikato river trails accessible from Taupo so not a complete paywall on mtb in the area. Will be interesting to see how the rollout goes over the next while. More info http://www.biketaupo.org.nz/faqs.html

I rode the trails in the weekend (am not a member, my bad) and they are most excellent. For $10 for a 7 day pass that sounds reasonable and I'd be happy to support trailbuilding in the area at that sort of price. :)

I rode there last year and bought a map at the visitor centre for $5. I think I was under the impression you had to buy one if you weren't a bike Taupo member.
I don't begrudge that type of thing, trails cost money. I'm sure the vast majority of people feel the same way.

You're meant to be a member of Bike Taupo to ride em, I'm not. Membership was free, and I didnt have it.

I've been riding there for years, and had never heard of the membership requirement until now. But I have no issue with paying a fee. The park is great, and its good value fun compared to a lot of activities in Taupo.

Makara struggles with getting people to become paid up members, and the donation box got stolen a few months ago :( Thankfully the council supports the club in a way that paid membership isn't a requirement.
