Cops Vs Motorbike

Postby schlek1 on Tue 20/Apr/10 8:31pm

Hi all.

I just watched campbell live and think there is a whole other side to the story than portrayed by the victims friends.

While I know they are hurting I think it is far to early to apportion blame to the cop.

It seems the distance between the top of the hill and the crash is 70m.

Based on my experience riding m/bikes I think I could have stopped in that time.

I also found this website which supports this. http://bikeraware.com/stats_stopping.htm

What do you guys reckon ? Anyone driven through that scene before ??

Been there and taken a look. Yes the motorcycle was speeding - HOWEVER, where the cop did a U-turn was totally bogus. From some conversations recently about another bike vs cop incident I would say that doing a U-turn where there was limited visibility and double yellow lines was pure lunacy and the cop deserves whatever punishment he gets. Having to run off the road in a similar situation when a cop was in too much of a hurry to chase a guy d going the other way I am very much aware that some traffic cops are way too keen.

On the other hand, the road rules say to not go faster than you abiliity to come to a halt (can't remember the exact words).

But are'nt yellow lines for not passing only ?. Nothing says you cant do a u turn if its safe ? Takes a lot less time to do a u turn than it does to overtake another vehicle.

could be wrong on that but near my place you can drive off a gravel road and turn right onto the main road with double yellow lines. Same sort of thing really.

I hope they can determine the motorcyclists speed as if its over 100k then I dont think the cop is at fault.

Im making my judgement solely from the picture on the front page of the Herald today, and all I can say is that cop needs to be pretty fucking thankful that motorbike wasn't a Kenworth.

perhaps you could show me some law that relates to this as im more than open to being corrected here.

I do note you left out of my quote the part about it being a safe area to do so

how about you shut the fuck up, and let the myriad investigations that are going on run their course, before blaming any party.

and no matter what else was happening, the po po doing a u turn where he did was the wrong call. like the pig in the Buller gorge.

*facepalm*

From the NZ Road code:

Passing on the right

Passing on the right can be dangerous, especially if you have to:

* change your path of travel
* enter a lane or part of the road used by oncoming vehicles.

+

Double yellow lines = no passing [over the yellow lines]

not saying what the cop did was right or wrong...

but the guy (in the ute) going over 150km an hour was just as likely to cause a fatal accident, hit a kid or someone innocent.

if the motorcyclist was going to fast then he contributed to the crash as well as you should always approach the brow of hill with caution what if there was stock on the road.... and old lady crossing or kids...

will wait and see what the investigation finds
