Q: How do you know when a trend is dead. or nearly so?

A: see attached.

I thought "oooh cool, someones gotten an early 90's Klein Quantum three colour fade and made it into a mean ass commuter.

then I looked closer and not so much.

I think it would be cool if it WAS a Klein quantum, but as it sits it is a triumph of form over substance. The gear is waaaay to big for serious commuting, and the tricolour thing is just trying too hard. It does have quite a good chain tensioning system.

True.

But Klien's never had mismatched rims, and stems. Or reverse brake levers so the bars could be cut down to an impractical width.

We also all know my thoughts on fashion bikes.

By the way, I'm not knocking fixies per se (and Mr Danose is entirely to blame for me jumping on the bandwagon), but for a commuter bike they are excellent: as close to zero maintenance as it is possible to get, light, snappy steering, and quick. I really like mine and because I ride it to work, it does more miles than all my other bikes put together. (that isnt saying a lot at present)

I guess it depends on where and how far you you commute. For my commute I'd rather be on my XC bike which has gears than on a SS. Thankfully I have a road bike and a CX bike that'll do the job just nicely.

I saw one of them in R&R and didn't know whether to cringe or laugh. That handlebar setup is ridiculous.

I live out in Karori so if I need to bomb into town, train in the wet, go to uni or head over to the old lady's place in Newtown I jump on my fixie. 40/16 is a mild gear but I find its perfect for the hills around Wellington, can just power up them and it sits comfortably on 30kph on the flats.

My go-to-bike:

Nice bike Jinxkal, but im also not keen on mismatch wheels unless they tie in with the colour scheme i.e white front frame and white wheel with blue rear frame and blue wheel, but in the end if the price was right I wouldnt care what the colour was :)

colour fadeing was a fad and should never come back again, solid colours is where its at :) Jinxkals bike reminds me of my old freestyle master I had back in 85 in u.k flouro green frame, white skyways, light blue tyres, white layback seatpost, blue bars ect.solid colours you just cant go wrong, look at all the ss/fixies in the u.s mostly solid flouro or pastal colours, chrome is awesome but would suit oldskool/traditional or elegance rides.
