20 September 2009 The Cheviot Hills Challenge is a 7km circuit beginning in the Cheviot Hills Reserve, just south of Cheviot on State Highway One. The first section of the course comprises undulating 4WD and single track with some steeper pitches and smooth downhills. The track then opens out onto farmland adjoining Cheviot Township before following a formed track adjacent to Gore Bay Road and back to the Reserve. Some improvements have been made to the course from the first race last year. The Lions Club will have BBQ food and refreshments available for sale at the fi nish line. A coffee van will also be at the finish line. Please bring cash as no EFTPOS will be available.
The Cheviot Hills Challenge crosses private land, the Lions would like to thank Peter and Ange Montgomery and Peter Mann for allowing access – please stay on the designated track.
The Lions have been hard at work in the reserve to improve and extend the track in the forest. Sole aim of the changes is to make it a better course for riders and have a bit of something for everybody. The steepest part of the track from last year is gone, but replaced with a slightly longer alternative that still takes you to the same elevation. Course is an achievable challenge for recreational athletes and four laps will be a good work out for expert riders coming out of winter. As above post says - info is on the website - and entry forms have also been delivered to most major bike shops throughout Christchurch (still a couple to get to). We have also taken on board comments posted following last years inaugural event - and will endeavour to get the results up on the website (and hopefully also vorb) much faster than last year.
This years event ran on Sunday. Beaut day in Cheviot and the domain is a nice spot. Well organised race with lots of prize action. Elite, Sport and Rec categories with age group splits means there is something there for all comers. Its a good event people but needs stronger support if it is going to continue. Put it on the calendar for next year.
rode the rec category this year as training was a tad "interrupted" here in chch lately. very poor turnout this year compared to previous years which is a real shame as track was by far the best its been in any of the previous years. espcially that first downhill thru the pines with the multiple switchbacks , that was just awesome to ride
