Cheating In Cycling-other Ways!

Postby Maxine on Thu 25/Oct/12 3:44pm

How hard would it be to develop and hide electronic components in a bike that assist a rider? Like something in the frame, that drives the bottom bracket giving a boost to the rider's pedalling.

You have to wonder if someone, team or country isn't to this side of things especially when people will take drugs to win.

You may have missed this saga Cancellara accused of motor in bike

There is a hub that claims to store energy from the push phase of the pedal stroke and release it in the dead phase - but the mechanism has more friction than the claimed benefit.

Okay, interesting! So I guess there are no checks in place, so rider's can get away doing such things ...

Fairly hard to mask that sort of thing. They do inspect the bicycles... It would be easy for them to xray them even (they might already do this?) after every stage if they wanted. You'd be rather sunk if that sort of thing got found... No benefit-of-the-doubt lenient doping sanctions would apply, they'd own you...

I'm pretty sure there was a period after the Cancellara saga where they X-Rayed some bikes. No idea if they still do.

What would the benefit be anyway, even if it were 100% efficient?
Is there enough bike speed variation during the pedal cycle for it to be worth trying to smooth off the peaks of wind drag?
If so my heavy rims do this very efficiently already. :)

So is drafting when commuting, especially when riding a $10K bike in lycra

We had a guy turn up at a club TT with a fairing on the front of his bike
I don't know if any club officials noticed but he rode like that.
He didn't do very well anyway :p

There were small clear polycarbonate fairings around a decade or two ago, they were said to be quite beneficial into a headwind.

I guess they would have practical problems with needing custom mounts, handling in sidewinds, vibration, cracking, wobbles, face slicing... just like generic motorcycle fairings.

At the time, that wasn't cheating - SG legitimately won using that setup in 1990. Subsequently, the rules were changed to disallow such abominations.
