Chch Is The Best Place... The Farm Track Thread

Postby mfw on Sun 21/Aug/11 12:44pm

I took my roadie out from it's winter wraps for the first time this morning and headed up the hills - perfect conditions - reminded me what living here is all about :D

LIFE'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!
Christchurch you are forgiven for all the earthquakes and crap

not as much fun on an MTB if you take notice of all the track closed signs though

maybe when its been fixed up in a few years time it will be, but right now other cities are a bit tempting.

I'm still happily in denial about the MTB situation :paranoid:
But when they do re-open it will maybe shut up the neigh-sayers that go on about the lack of rocks dumbing down the tracks

Lack of rocks?

Try Radi Garden, or gum trees, or nats, anyone complaining about the lack of rocks in Chch is an e-rider :p

Maybe a knowledge of the tracks in question would help you ;)

Surprisingly yes :o

Funnily enough I've never had a crash on a hard track thats resulted in a wambulance. Always in places where you're off guard :D

I haven't ridden since before snow part 2 but that was a loverly weekend we just had - though I spent much of it on interior decorating :hmmm: Although the hills have been a 'mare with closures etc (though it should it be remembered by no means all tracks have been closed ) a big shout out for the much maligned Bottle Lake - riding there has steadily got better over recent years with lots of the repairs & all the new stuff done in Teddington Chip = much less of a sandpit than in days of old. Although there really is only one loop now, riding in either direction has become more common again as line of sight is generally good.

Rest assured the hills will rise again - Nick S has a handy amount in his tracks budget, and this spring / summer will see a significant amount of chip compacted into U channel tracks such as Godley Head & Old Dyers Pass tracks. The reality is the naysayers re rocks & dumbing down do not have a leg to stand on as if left to erode away & choke up with rocks the tracks will eventually become the domain of a few, when in fact they exist to meet the needs & desires of the many  :satan:

I second the motion put by the OP !
(Martin - I take it you are not moving to Auckland after all ??)

Exactly - before this little hitch with the snow there was still plenty of ways to entertain yourself.
Oh no. No Rapaki

while i'm not entirely convinced of your thesis about chc AT PRESENT mfw, I had an amazingly pleasant experience riding up el bastardo last saturday to the sound of running water form all teh snow melt and a less pleasant experience on the ice - but it was worth it just for the sound of water running on the bstard. an unexpectedly uplifting experience . .

indeed sunday was a glorious day to be out on a bike. we even managed to snaffle a couple of bits of singletrack that werent affected by the 'tracks closed' signs (on account of them not being solely mtnbike tracks, and being adequately dry). twas magnifique. but then, i was never in doubt.

anyone know of anyone been hit with the $1200 fine on Rapaki yet???

nah apparently that's what they're resorting to to keep people off it. anyone caught ignoring the 'CLOSED' signs will be fined. its since that video of the dude's (doing what everyone else had been doing (-tho, not me!)) riding the Summit Rd.

I don't get why people are so hung up about rapaki being closed anyway - farm park track has been open for ages, and is all of 500m over from rapaki, go up that (admittedly the huge amounts of tar seal climbing involved in getting to the bottom of huntsbury puts me off that one).

hopefully the rock work down bowenvale will be done in time to coincide with old bowenvale drying out
