http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gears/

Using the calculator for nominal 26inch wheel, 175mm cranks, and 32/16, the gain ratio comes out at 3.8 (and the gear inches comes out at 52.0)

Using the calculator based around 700x50 / 50-622 / 29inch tyre, 175mm cranks and 34/19, that gain ratio also comes out at 3.8 (and the gear inches calculates to 51.8)

Your a legend dented, thats exactly what I was looking for.

Cheers.

I'll give the 32:17 a go but it looks like 32:18 will be spot on. (I really want to use the surly ring I have)

Fox have a new 80mm and 100mm 29 inch fork listed in their catalogue - release is October 2007 I believe. Seen pics online and they look to be the usual steller fork Fox are reknowned for.............

Saw that looks very nice.

A 29er fork from the company that said they would never make a 29er fork.

29er wheels are interesting for sure. I wouldn't say they are only for tall riders either, unlike many people think- I'm a tad under 5'7'' and can honestly say that I'm comfortable on one if I take some time with the setup. The advantages are still there, although I probably wouldn't use one as my everyday mountain bike.

I recommend that every one interested in high end 29ers check out the offerings from Niner, I had a blat on a medium one and it felt really good- the small would probably have felt even better for me.

I've just done a consulting job, and so have a few spare pingers. I'm thinking about building up a race hardtail, perhaps a 29er. Anyone got any suggestions for frames?

Salsa do both Scandium/Carbon stayed and True Temper steel 29'er frames Sifty. Not too badly priced.

http://www.salsacycles.com/elmariachi_le.html (edit: single speed, oops, here's the link to the geared version: http://www.salsacycles.com/images/zoom_elmariachiBl.jpg )

I'm considering the El Mariachi complete - 1x9, rigid. It's either that or a GT Force 1, so quite a contrast!

Not really a serious option, but:

Otherwise, Specialized are doing 29er bikes this year, as is almost everyone else.

Gary Fisher are going to produce a carbon xc race 29er . 1200 grams for the frame with steel plating to protect areas of the carbon.

It is super bling and would be my dream 29er, but next up would be a niner- the niner bikes are very sweet, here in chch there are a few. PM blingpusher to see what he has in stock, I believe that the niners have been getting some very high praise from the local riders and racers.

Ive only had a few rides on my 29er so far but I have a suspicion that a light weight geared hardtail 29er would be the biz for enduro races and even xc.

The nines seem nice as do the salsas. Both these should be avaliable in NZ.

Alternativly trek are going big on 69ers in 2008 (29er up front 26 out back) Don't know if they will be bring them into NZ but certainly look interesting.

Have a look at the 29er forum at mtbr.com. The yanks seem mad on 29ers at the moment. Will have heaps of ideas for frames if you are wilingl to import something.

I forgot to mention - I spent a bit of time working on a Fisher 29er fully - forget the model name, it was ex team from last year. Was nice, and apparently a perfect 24hr machine, it'll be raced at the worlds at Sea Otter next month.

You want a hardtail 29er? Or a fully?

The Trek 69er single speed is available in NZ, my boss has one and I think that they can be specially ordered. The 69er geared bike with the fox f29 will probably be available by special order as well, a few might be brought in for stock.

I'm happy with the Epic I have, but am thinking about a complementary bike - something lighter, so faster up the tip track etc. I reckon a hardtail's the way to go, and I reckon a 29er might be the business. A 69er sounds fantastic, but I'd want to be on it all the time...

why would you want a 29 on the front and a 26 on the back.

all the advantages of a 29er compromised with a 26" rear wheel. To me you'd need rocks in your head.
