I have a 2.0L 4WD manual Legacy 2007 model. It is great for gravel roads and rally driving, but the way it is geared and with the weight, a bit of a dray around town. High/low ratio is great for skifields, and the guy at Ohau last year wouldn't let me up when only letting up 4WD's - something about the low-profile tyres.....

Uses about 13l/100km around town, and uses super. But then again it is a company car so have developed lead foot tendances!! :paranoid:

Actually out of lease and soon to get a Hyundy Santa's Sleigh!

our previous caldina seemed about the same size as same sized engine Legacys

nah - we looked at both and the legacy had more load space in the back. Having said that 2l non-turbo subarus are underpowered massively - go up to a 2.5 or bigger if you don't like playing russian roulette every time you overtake

actually 2nd most - most stolen is commodore

now think how many are on the roads

(actually that should make corollas the most stolen - but I guess even crims have some standards)

Lies! :eh:
Kims (now defunct due to being flooded in teh quake) one was fine, you just have to bung it in the lowest practical gear and floor it, plus it was excellent on gas.

I wouldnt buy a Caldina cos as Trail has pointed out the brakes suck.

And now having owned a 4wd and a 2(front)wd Legacy, the 4wd is not just a perceived safety thing, front wheel drive cars are not only ghey, they are really dangerously ghey!!

These things come in '4WD', and unlike their predecessor, they handle very nicely. Only in slushmatic though unfortunately, although the 4WD version gets an extra cog and 'tiptronic control'.

2WD version gets 430km in town and 600km from 55l tank.

Have had a 3l 04 Legacy Wagon for 6 months now. Thirstyish around town (mid 13's). Almost into the 9's on a trip. Mid 16's towing a boat to the coast. Pretty snoozy until around 3,500 then it goes pretty well. Also has the 5spd auto. Wouldn't think a 2l atmo would pull the skin off a rice pudding. Rides better than the CX-7 it replaced. Would buy again

4WD is a bit pointless for the most part unless theres a specific need. You will get Increased fuel consumption, reduced performance and increased noise as they age (extra diffs to whine). Our last car was a 4WD (Mazda Capella V6), didn't even know it until I was poking around underneath a week after we bought it, I can think of one occasion it was needed in 9yrs on a very icy road.
I don't know where the supposed extra safety thing comes from, load of bollocks from the Subaru marketing dept I guess.

GUB's poll talks about getting up to the ski fields. I wouldn't want to take a 2wd up Canty skifield roads in Winter.
