Hi I built one of Tojja's LED lights back in 07 using 3xSeoul Seminconductor P4 U-bin LED's (think 105 lumens each)
Looking to upgrade to new tech whats the latest in LED's now.

SSC still stuck at U bin, though now it split into U1,U2,U3 ... U3 is 115lm @ 350mA and U1(likely what you have from 07) is 95

Cree...
XPEs R3 126lm @ 350mA

XPGs R5 145lm at 350mA (but a bigger die so wider beam)

You'll need new optics too

I just thought I would post up my lights that I am building. It is for my Schwinn Newsboy. I bought the chrome steel mudguards last week, the light pod is a VW Beetle 1958-63 italian spec front indicator. :)
I already have a shimano dynamo front hub which has a light sensor as a switch running a 6v 3w bulb. This means when I am riding it turns on automatically when it is dark. However I wanted to clean up the lines and go for an integrated unit.
Couple of issues I need to overcome, the mudguard is more curved than the VW front wing and needed to be sanded to the correct shape. I need to make a internal housing as the VW one would normally be mounted from below and will foul the bike tyre.
This is an initial mock up to see where it looks best.

pretty!!!

Are you hoping to get a beam of light through that diffuser?,. or just an easily seen all round glow? have you decided on what your light source will be?
It's not really the kinda thing I'd make.., (I'm more a function over form kinda guy,) but I'd love to see how it comes out in the end..,

Not making but repairing….gluing my little Cateye 3 LED lights back together after the internals self destructed.

After getting my head around building a triple Cree XR-E light on the cheap... I'm wondering if it might just be easier to buy something complete...

Magicshines seem pretty hard to beat for the price.

Your thoughts?

I want a lot of light... But its surprising how quickly the costs add up for all the wee bits and pieces... That, and the lack of access to milling machinery for making swanky heatsunk casings...

I built 5 sets of LED lights about 2 winters ago, by the time all the bits were added up there was about $1000 of materials before we started building them (about half of that was batteries and chargers). Once you add your own time to the cost, buying lights starts looking pretty good. You don't get any of the tinkering in the shed that goes with building your own but not everyone is into that.

Could i power two Cree XR-Es (or other??) on a single 8.4v RC car battery? That way I'm using existing chargers/batteries?
